Grade 6-8–The real-life situations and colorful design and illustrations of these titles may appeal to reluctant readers. Alcohol begins with a story of arrests at a party with underage drinking. Alcohol testing, history, effects, dangers, rehabilitation facilities, and recovery organizations are discussed. The second title describes the largest at-sea drug bust of a fishing boat, the Svesda Maru. Cocaine's different forms, history, physical effects, and recovery programs are covered. Interviews in both books make the information personal and accessible. The glossaries, chapter notes, and indexes are adequate; the lists for further reading and Web sites are minimal. Tables, charts, boxed quotations, and some full-color photographs aid understanding. Joyce Brennfleck Shannon's Alcohol Information for Teens (Omnigraphics, 2005) provides much more information and documentation.
