Still Useful for students, professionals and the average individual,

I really enjoyed reading this book as a lay counselor. I found that the author has a thorough understanding of family dynamics as it relates to trauma (almost always the cause of alcoholism or any addiction). Her structure is written for a wide audience and I congratulate her for doing a thorough job. Some things she incorporates are: a clear format for all aspects of Alcohol misuse and abuse; detailing how trauma leads to alcohol abuse; insightful discussion of psychological, physiological and social consequences on the abuser and those around him; tools to assess whether an individual has a drinking problem; traditional and newer approaches (with lots of references to others work); an appendix with contact information. I have attempted to contact any of the organizations so that would be the only area I can't comment on.
Her background is varied and she has had experience in several settings as a detox director in nursing so her approach is both experiential and medically backed. Her glossary would be especially helpful to those newly learning since it explains how symptoms are interrelated. I think this would be helpful to any organizations who wants to provide referrals or a general primer for those coming to the realization that a love one has an alcohol dependency. She even has suggestions on developing other interests and self-care for those who have codependency with the alcoholic.
