Editorial Reviews

Review
"This instructive manual presents a pragmatic and clinically proven approach to the prevention and treatment of undergraduate alcohol abuse." --Adolescence

Review
"Dimeff, Marlatt, and their colleagues at the Addictive Behaviors Research Center have synthesized years of tested and successful harm reduction strategies into a 'best practices' manual. Innovative, clear, and flowing with humane guidance for reducing students' risks, this is a book that moves the harm reduction approach forward in college settings. Used with college students who drink heavily, BASICS can reduce harm and save lives." --Patricia M. Fabiano, MS, MA, Director, Prevention and Wellness Services, Western Washington University

"This book provides a very helpful research-based approach for addressing an all-too-common problem among college students and other young adults: heavy drinking. Its theoretical and conceptual underpinnings provide a quality foundation not only for working with specific individuals, but also for guiding campuswide programmatic efforts. User-friendly and practical, BASICS is a promising approach to dealing with heavy drinking and may be applicable to a range of other health issues as well." --David S. Anderson, PhD, Center for the Advancement of Public Health, George Mason University, Fairfax, Virginia

5.0 out of 5 stars The Most Effective Harm Reduction Approach to College Alcohol Abuse, July 4, 2009
By David A. Baggenstos (Bellingham, WA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I hold a masters in psychology with a concentration in measurement, evaluation and statistical analysis. I also worked for three years at the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Institute (University of Washington). I mention this because my review is based on my first hand knowledge of the primary research that supports the approach described in the BASICS book.

This book is THE book for anyone interested in Brief Motivational Interviewing and the Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students. It describes the research and the approach for reducing harms and risks resulting from alcohol use. The approach has a strong research foundation is far more pragmatic than the popular abstinence based approach for addressing the problem of alcohol use among college students.

There is a body of research that supports the claim that most college students experiment with substance use and most college students mature out of this experimental stage in their life as it relates to substance use and abuse. BASICS speeds of this maturation process.

What is the real problem with college students using alcohol? In some cases it is illegal, but from my perspective and I know many share this view, the real problem are the potential harms and risks that result from consuming alcohol. The risks and potential harms increase significantly after a certain amount of alcohol is consumed. The outcome of BASICS when administered correctly for most students is a statistically significant decrease in harms and risks that are a direct result of alcohol consumption.

BASICS is a harm reduction approach. It is a pragmatic and empathic approach that helps college students reduce potential harms related to alcohol use. If a student continues to drink (and many will even after they get in trouble) it is far more effective to work with the student to reduce the risks such as driving while intoxicated, over consumption, unprotected sex, violence, missing class, etc. than punishing the student, or implementing many of the non-evidence based approaches.

This ground breaking approach is being applied to other behaviors that result in potential harms such as gambling for example. I believe so strongly in the research and approach described in this book that my company has built a software program that helps colleges around the country facilitate this program.

I recommend this book to any health care, health promotion or counselor. While the approach has been refined since the publication of the book their are a wide variety of resources available on the Web that will give you access to researchers, trainers and clinicians with a great deal of expertise in the harm reduction approach. It is no exaggeration to state that the BASICS Intervention has saved 1,000s of lives reduced countless injuries - both psychological and physical through using this short, low cost, research supported intervention.
