Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Detective Naru's been dumped, so he's spending his nights drinking with his partner, Kita. After getting drunk, passing out and waking up naked with Kita, he isn't even sure what happened, and Kita is no help. It turns out Kita wants Naru, regardless of Naru's feelings or trauma. Naru's face is frequently drawn like a much younger manga-style character, and it's odd to see an eight-year-old's head on a grown man's body, especially during nude scenes. The sexual politics are similarly disturbing. For instance, when their boss finds out about Kita's plans and desires, he figuratively shrugs and tells Kita "don't pick on him too much," instead of stopping one of his employees from trying to date rape the other. He condones it because Naru has erotic dreams about Kita, and Naru's innocence will teach Kita what love really means. There's a lot of fantasy in this book: when one police detective is licking another's ear at work, the story is clearly not intended to be realistic. In subsequent chapters, the two get jealous of each other in different ways, and they talk about wanting each other, but after the starting setup, much of the book is treading water. Yuko's art is standard for the yaoi genre.

5.0 out of 5 stars Engaging and enjoyable! Think Fake!, March 31, 2007
This review is from: Alcohol, Shirt And Kiss (Yaoi) (Paperback)
This soft core Yaoi traces the relationship development between 2 police officers. Sounds like Fake ? Definitely but on the love and without the police actions and it is not a series. The story consists of 9 chapters, the title of each chapter aptly describing its contents in 3 words. Alcohol, Shirt and Kiss is the first chapter's title and these same 3 words are just how it all started for Naru and Kita. The plot focusing on their relationship is engaging, at times hilarious, sometimes disarmingly sweet and those of us into romance certainly appreciate the emotions build-up. The side characters of their 3 police colleagues are quite solid, each one having his/her said in the 2 guys' relationship, which add to the fun. As for the couple, they are very likable. Naru is the endearing uke who gradually becomes more demanding and Kita the cool seme does have a vulnerable side which balances their relationship and makes it more realistic. The artwork is decent and the caricartures certainly add to the enjoyment of the story. A very good read indeed.

1.0 out of 5 stars worst manga ever, February 8, 2008
This review is from: Alcohol, Shirt And Kiss (Yaoi) (Paperback)
Well, I don't know if it is the worst manga ever, but it just seemed... it just wasn't compelling. Halfway through I didn't care about the characters or the story... so I just quit reading it.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's sweet!, August 6, 2008
By
Ran-chan (California, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Alcohol, Shirt And Kiss (Yaoi) (Paperback)
I just loved this story. It's starts out as quite a strange situation (okay, really strange), but morphs into this sweet romance. The fact that Kita lies to his coworker, Naruse, by telling him they slept together starts Kita off as kind of a jerk. But over time, I got passed it and loved how Kita was this rather emotionless and the cool type, while Naruse was cute and gullible. Seeing their relationship grow over time was so charming and I really fell in love with the two.

However, this manga isn't perfect. It can become a little too sweet at times, and I'm a lover of sweet yaoi, so for me to say this is big. Not to spoil anything, but whenever the words "Let's become one" are in yaoi, it kinda triggers my gag reflexes. But besides that, it's really nice. Plus I liked all the titles...Alcohol, Shirt and Kiss, Criminal, Girlfriend, and Proposal...gah! So cute! >_<

Oh, and this is very light on the action (I've seriously seen 16+ yaoi manga more graphic than this) so if you're looking for hardcore, this isn't for you. (Kita and Naruse's relationship is kind of slow moving...)
