This review is from: Alcuin of York: His Life and Letters (Paperback)
Stephen Allott's collection includes over 150 of about 300 known letters penned by the Anglo-Saxon scholar Alcuin of York. 72 of these letters are provided in their entirety as are most of 55 others. He includes helpful footnotes, organizes the letters thematically, and places approximate dates where evidence allows. Alcuin's most famous poem, "On the Saints of the Church of York," is also included along with a brief sketch of Alcuin's life. However, Allott has regretably removed many of Alcuin's redundancies, resulting in the omission of many letters and parts of letters that some experts of Alcuin might find useful. These scholars might also prefer reading the original Latin versions of these letters found complete and untranslated in other, older and rarer volumes. All in all, Allott's text provides an excellent translated source for students and teachers of history who have not yet completed their studies in medieval Latin and who wish to discover Alcuin in his own words.
