If you've enjoyed the all classic Beverly Cleary books and are looking for similar material -- sweet, believable stories about regular kids in everyday situations -- then you might want to check out Johanna Hurwitz and her New York-based ouvre. This is the third book in a series about a conscientious young boy named Aldo Sossi, who became a vegetarian in third grade, and later moved from New York City to suburban New Jersey. In this volume Aldo looks forward to a long, luxurious summer, which he hopes to spend sampling all the flavors at his local ice cream shop, but fate intervenes to give him some bigger goals: Aldo starts to help his mom with her volunteer work at Meals On Wheels, which leads him to some other interesting projects, such as winning a dirty-sneaker contest sponsored by a local shoe store. As always, the tone of Hurwitz's writing is a delight - this book is fun to read aloud, with characters you can grow close to. Recommended! (Joe Sixpack, ReadThatAgain children's book reviews)
