Book Description

4 and upP and upCarter G Woodson Honor Book (Awards)
As a young boy born into slavery in Virginia, Alec Turner was forbidden to learn to read. Naturally he was frightened when Zephie, his owner's granddaughter, first offered to teach him, but she told him that if he learned to read, he could become a free man. As Alec mastered the alphabet from a small primer, Zephie lit in him a spark of hope, which became a flame.

Alec's Primer is based on the true story of Alec Turner (1845-1923), who learned to read and, eventually, just as Zephie predicted, became a free man. Traveling to Vermont where he established his home and became a landowner, Alec kept his cherished primer with him throughout his life. Years later, Alec's daughter Daisy told his dramatic tale of defiance and endurance to the Vermont Folklife Center. Mildred Pitts Walter and Larry Johnson have transformed Alec's powerful story into an engrossing picture book that affords young readers an authentic lens through which to view history.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 1-3–Walter describes the childhood of Alec Turner, a slave who later ran away from a Virginia plantation and joined the Union Army. The boy is taught to read by Miss Zephie, the granddaughter of his owner. Based on a true story, this offering could have been a moving affirmation of the triumph of the human spirit, like Doreen Rappaport's Freedom River (Hyperion, 2000) or Elizabeth Fitzgerald's Virgie Goes to School with Us Boys (S & S, 2000). Instead, Walter presents a flat, bland account of a series of incidents: "One day, Alec and Miss Zephie were outside by the milk house. Alec was reading the primer. Mistress Gouldin rode up and surprised them…." Johnson's expressive paintings do give the characters life that the text does not. Turner's interesting story deserves a more riveting retelling.–Kathleen Whalin, York Public Library, ME

From Booklist

*Starred Review* Gr. 2-4. The power of this escape story, which is based on true events, is in the realistic detail about a child under slavery and in the storytelling that passes on the history. Alec is frightened when the Virginia plantation owner's granddaughter wants to teach him to read. But, with the girl's help, he secretly studies the primer--until the day the brutal owner discovers him. She slashes his face, and his blood drips onto the book. He takes the primer with him when he escapes to join the Northern army, and it remains with him when he later becomes a landowner in Vermont. Eventually, his daughter tells his story, and she gives the bloodstained primer to the Vermont Folklore Center, which has published this book. Walter's spare, dramatic words and Johnson's stirring double-page paintings present a glimpse of the history in a brutal world--the child's intense fear, his bond with his mother and with his blonde friend, and, finally, his triumph. 5.0 out of 5 stars A captivating story about the power of literacy to transform lives, April 17, 2009
This review is from: Alec's Primer (Carter G Woodson Honor Book (Awards)) (Hardcover)
A Carter G. Woodson Honor Book (and award given by the National Council for the Social Studies), Alec's Primer is a children's picturebook based on the true-life story of Alec Turner (1845-1923), a boy born into slavery in Virginia. Alec's strong will kept getting him into trouble, and he was sent to work in the plantation fields for it. But his life changed forever when the granddaughter of his owner, Zephie, offered to teach him how to read. At the time slaves were forbidden to read, but Zephie told Alec that if he learned to read, he could become a free man. Just as Zephie predicted, Alec was eventually able to travel to Vermont and become a respected landowner; for the rest of his life, he kept the cherished reading primer that helped to transform his life. Beautiful color paintings by Larry Johnson illustrate this captivating story about the power of literacy to transform lives. Highly recommended especially for public and school children's library collections.

4.0 out of 5 stars Rutgers University Project on Economics and Children, September 29, 2008
This review is from: Alec's Primer (Carter G Woodson Honor Book (Awards)) (Hardcover)
Five-year old Alec, born into slavery on a tobacco plantation in Virginia, had a sense of humor and an independent streak. These qualities did not sit too well with the plantation owner, Mistress Gouldin, who reassigned him from kitchen work with his mother to difficult outdoor work monitored by the plantation overseer. The passing of several years brought Alec an unexpected opportunity to learn how to read under the tutelage of the plantation owner's daughter, Zephie. Alec's initial fear of breaking the rules gave way to a deep desire to learn to read from the small primer that Zephie gave him. Empowered by the ability to read, Alec risked his life to escape from the plantation and join the union army during the Civil War.

Based on true events in the life of Alec Turner, this compelling book is a useful resource for teaching younger children about the harsh realities of slavery in U.S. history. Using age-appropriate text and rich illustrations, Alec's Primer effectively communicates the hard work that was expected of plantation slaves, the dangers of breaking the rules, and the glorious feelings that came with freedom and social justice. This important book makes a valuable addition to any collection of picture books loaded with substantive content.

4.0 out of 5 stars My 7 yr old loves this story, and so do I, April 28, 2005

This review is from: Alec's Primer (Carter G Woodson Honor Book (Awards)) (Hardcover)
This is a very nice story about a slave boy growing up on a Virginia plantation. It is taken from a true story, and a little about the person is written at the end. It is well written and enjoyable for children, and gives them a peak at what life must have been like as a slave without be morose. It is also well illustrated. My 7 year old requests it be read to her on a regular basis.
