Editorial Reviews

Review

"One would be hard-pressed to put together an assemblage of people to equal the scholars included in this collection-the cream of the crop of those esoteric scholars who have studied Crowley. The volume makes a significant contribution to esoteric studies and will set future debates about Crowley. It will be a must-read text for all esoteric scholars in the next generation."--J. Gordon Melton, Distinguished Professor of American Religious History, Baylor University

This is a very fine collection of Essays by studious individuals who have examined and studied the diverse published works of Mr. Crowley. As a retired professor of Philosophy who has always recommended that students read original sources and not secondary sources and summaries, I say now that the more you have read Aleister Crowley in the original, the more you will enjoy and become engaged with these Essays. It also cannot be denied that even if your study of Crowley is casual, let us say, some of these Essays might very well give you the kick-start you need to discover a base that unites Eastern Esotericism and Western pragmatism. This is not a Book for flakey new-agers.

what a wonderful compilation of academic essays covering the vast philosophies that crowley has influenced and brought into the western world. 15 well-written essays with great references covering magick and occultism, yoga and tantra, the yezidis, freemasonry, wicca, mormonism, scientology and satanism. love or hate him, crowley was a spiritual revolutionary who had little use for traditional structure. anyone who knows crowley is well aware of the negative public perceptions of the man. these essay forgo the histrionic drama of his activities and look deeply into his philosophy and how it has affected and brought to light various religious/magickal movements. the essay on scientology shows it's goal was no different than crowley's system of realizing the infinite power of self to manipulate, transform and transcend the limits of the physical universe. all the essays acknowledge crowley was a dominating figure in twentieth-century occultism. though crowley wasn't a satanist per se, LaVey copied some of his material, but it is the Temple of Set with Michael Aquino who draws on many of crowley's thoughts. it is also a bonus that oxford university press has published this important document that delves into crowley's tremendous drive towards systematizing eastern, western and mystical experiences. daniel p. mannix must be twirling in his grave! this is a must own for any serious reader into occult thought and how crowley has affected many belief systems to this day. a great forward by wouter j. hanegraaff adds to this fascinating book.

i'll be short: VERY NICE collection of essays that dissect the influence of Perdurabo/the Beast on western esoteric practices. a variety
of 'angles' of evaluation weave a solid overview of key periods and approaches that mr. Crowley undertook organically to further his
life's work and the development of the cogent religion know as Thelema. ....very readable, informative, and illuminating.
