Editorial Reviews

Review
-A storytelling talent that keeps the reader interested.- -Publisher's Weekly --This text refers to the Kindle Edition edition.

Product Description
Paul Cook's fascination with the human dream state is manifested in this novel of a man who is a professional dreamer. Nicholas Tejada is directly inter faced with the super-computer Mnemos Nine, extracting useful data and images from his vivid mindscapes as part of the top-secret government Project Foresee. Tejada experiences his dreams as reality, awakening in the midst of the inception of World War III. When he next arrives, there has been a nuclear holocaust and he is forced to live underground, on the lookout for leftover bombs. As he continues to awaken in the far future he is pursued by a woman whose advances he resists. Paul Cook's scenarios of the future have been called "intriguing" by Publishers Weekly, and his storytelling ability keeps the reader gripped, making THE ALEJANDRA VARIATIONS an utterly involving, imaginative thriller. --This text refers to the Kindle Edition edition.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Neglected Masterpiece, March 16, 2002
By A Customer
Paul Cook's mission seems to be to fool the reader. Just when you think you know what's going on, he pulls a switcheroo. Along the way he cajoles the reader with a fluid writing style and interesting visions of the future. I liked the Clantrams the best. I could have seen more of them. But, really, at heart, this book is a love story and, in the end, it works. More people should read Cook's books. Only his apparent lack of ambition is holding him back.

2.0 out of 5 stars Typical 80's sci-fi, November 18, 2003
By Charybdis "Chary" (Arlington, Texas United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Alejandra Variations (Paperback)
This book, while hinting at a golden age plot, really falls back on a very cliched plot device. It was rather interesting to see the way he ignores physics and the reality of machine degradation (mid 80's technology still operational 1000 years in the future) in a way that the golden age writers used to do, but the resolution was a copout that anyone familiar with science fiction will see coming from the first chapter. If he'd just ended the book without falling back on his initial storyline it would have rated an extra star just for the memories it evoked.
