Rather good introduction to Alekhine's defence, August 25, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Alekhine's Defence (Everyman Chess) (Paperback)
This opening book on the Alekhine's Defence is one of those that are built on complete games. This format is perfectly suitable for the opening in question, because to play this opening correctly it is essential that you learn the ideas and the correct piece configurations rather than the variations.
This book cannot really be used as a reference book, but rather as an introduction to the opening. Many lines get a very superficial treatment. But as an introduction the book does rather a good job, presenting material on all lines for both sides.
There is nothing really special in this book, but it is a good work that will be quite adequate for anyone starting out on this opening or playing against it. And at the time of writing (2003) this is the most recent book on this opening, which is relevant for some sharp lines.

Good uptade on the Alekhine, August 10, 2010
This review is from: Alekhine's Defence (Everyman Chess) (Paperback)
This is a useful, well-written book on the Alekhine. I recommend reading it along with other manuals on the subject, eg, Cox's Alekhine's Defence and the classic by Eales & Williams. Four starts.
