Alen Paralda HEPA UV Air Purifier

At the recommendation of my sister, who has bought the Paralda first - we purchased the air purifier for our home. My mother suffers from asthma and terrible allergies and lives with us - so anything we can do to make her more comfortable is worth it.

The Paralda is long and slender yet compact - it easily fit in our living room and didn't stick out like a sore thumb. It is very quiet and has varying speeds. It also had a UV lamp that zaps bacteria - and anything the HEPA air filter doesn't get. I noticed the air seemed fresher and there was less dust on the furniture. It felt like the pristine air you usually find in the dentist office - fresh, cleaner, very comfortable. The Paralda is not noisy at all compared to our Ionic Breeze air purifier we used to keep in my mother's bedroom. The control pad was very easy to figure out - even my mother could manage it on her own.

We have had the Paralda for several weeks now - and my mother seems to have more energy from sleeping better as a result of our cleaner air - which makes the price, to me, completely worth it. I must also mention - we run the Paralda all the time - and we have seem no marked increase in our electric bill ... it is a Energy Star rated appliance - and every little bit of savings helps us nowadays. I'd highly recommend this unit.

I have owned two of Paralda units for about a month now. Generally they do what they are supposed to do and they are great at cleaning the air. Here are some things I noted:

o The units are really quiet at low speeds (1 and 2). One of the units is somewhat louder, emitting some low volume whine.

o The capability to program the settings for time and speed is great but be warned that there is no settings backup capability built in. One will lose the settings when the power is disconnected or lost or when the filter has been unlocked.

o The manual documents that you can switch between Manual and Programmed mode by touching the PGM key. I found this not to be the case: one can switch from Programmed mode into Manual by turning the machine OFF and ON again but there is no way to go back to Programmed mode, except for going through the entire programming cycle, again.

o Alen's customer support is mostly non existent. Their only response to my complaints about the above got me a suggestion to return the units for a refund.

I agree with the other reviews that this air purifier looks and functions great. I feel like using it has minimized my allergies. However, when the filter is on, there is also a small light on. I cannot figure out how to turn it off after six months and I have concluded that you cannot turn it off (please comment if I'm wrong and include instructions for turning it off!!). I bought this for my bedroom and I like to have it on overnight. However, the light makes it more difficult. I still gave it 4 stars, b/c I otherwise like it.

Got this purifier to reduce cat dander, air seems much cleaner, purifier is tall doesn't take up too much room and the light green color seems to blend with furniture in the room

The description for Alen Paralda Hepa Air Purifier is misleading. It certainly is not quiet. Even on the lowest setting, there is a fan noise- shrilling SSSHHHHHHHSSSss noise.... This is NOT suitable for a bedroom, or even the living room, if you want to rest. Unless you have poor hearing, it is anoying, and disturbs your sleep.

Now I realize how spoiled I've been with old my Sharper Image's Ionic Breeze, totally silent, and lasted ten years. I cleaned my ionic breeze, weekly, (and never had to buy the $59 replacement filters, like this Alen Paralda).

The Alen Paralda unit advises running it continuously on low, but I cannot sleep! It is too noisy. This unit is a big disappointment; and I am attempting to return it, but trying repeatedly to get a return authorization number.....

BIG Problem, Sylvane's website will not provide a return authorization number. Website says returns given only for sales "directly" from Sylvane. However, on Amazon, the order order was filled directly by Sylvane, but does not have an "S" at the beginning of Amazon's order. Customer service will not take telephone calls for returns, just refers you back to website. Now I need Amazon's help to get a refund.

The unit weighed about 20 pounds, but is double boxed, in large packing. UPS charges were $76.98 to return the Alen Purified, plus $9.08 to return the filter, which comes in a separate box. Ouch! Very expensive.

Beware: Sylvane has not confirmed receiving my returns (tracked on UPS), 10 days after they received them.

And, for the person who wrote the review saying it was quieter than an ionic breeze, I really question their credibility. That was misleading, just like Paralda's own description, "whisper quiet", (False.)
