Serious Setup

With the DM10 X Kit we've included a comprehensive set of large drum and cymbal pads, and an all-new XRack. The DM10 X Kit is designed to offer capabilities and features previously only available on kits costing thousands more. The DM10 X Kit features an expansive six-drum, four-cymbal configuration with sizes and spatial relationships that will feel natural to acoustic and electronic drummers alike: a 12-inch snare, two 10-inch toms, two 12-inch floor toms, a 12-inch hi-hat, a 16-inch, three-zone ride cymbal and two 14-inch crash cymbals.

Serious Support

Designed with an emphasis on performance and adaptability, the DM10 X Kit's all-new XRack is rugged, chrome-plated and features an ultra-solid four-post design. New Alesis quick-release clamps secure each pad in place and allow you to rearrange your setup in seconds without tools and without having to take the rack apart. A few turns of a T-bolt is all it takes to release a clamp and move a pad. The DM10 X Kit's snare pad comes with a separate, fully adjustable snare stand that allows you to place the snare pad precisely where you want it.

Serious Surfaces

The DM10 X Kit also features Alesis' acoustic-feeling RealHead pads in 10 and 12-inch sizes. The dual-zone pads feature real mylar drumheads and real triple-flanged counterhoops for the feel you demand. The snare and tom pads are dual zone, enabling you to perform rimshots, rim clicks or assign other sounds such as cymbals, gongs and cowbells on the tom rims. You can use virtually any single or double kick pedal with the RealHead Kick Pad, or split the DM10's kick input with a Y-cable and connect an optional second kick pad for the pedal feel you prefer.

Serious Smarts

At the core of the DM10 X Kit is the groundbreaking Alesis DM10 module. The DM10 hosts a built-in sequencer, metronome, top-panel mixer, and a variety of outputs. It also includes more than 1,000 uncompressed, sample-based sounds that were produced using Alesis' proprietary Dynamic Articulation multi-sample technology.

Not only does the DM10 deliver lightning-fast, uber-accurate tracking, the widest dynamic range of any module, incredibly drummer-friendly operation, a massive input section, but it also has the most realistic, natural sound set available in any drum module. Dig deeper into the DM10 module you'll find some of the most in-demand acoustic drum sounds from legendary drum brands, a huge arsenal of top producers' go-to snare drums, real American, Canadian, Chinese, and Turkish cymbals, and a choice selection of classic drum machine and electronic percussion sounds that have fueled the biggest hit records.

Serious Samples

Discerning ears will notice that each sound is actually a series of different samples; multiple dynamic-level samples and articulations are all built in so as you play harder and softer, the drum or cymbal changes its timbre, not just its volume. This engineered realism is known as Dynamic Articulation, an Alesis exclusive.

You can play with or without reverb for different room sounds and enjoy a wide variety of rimshots, rim clicks and different stick-placement sounds on the cymbals. For example, a hi-hat's sound depends on a number of factors: how open or closed the pedal is, how hard it is struck, and other variables resulting in 40 different sounds--plus foot chick and heel splash.

Put simply, the DM10 X Kit has the most generous drum and cymbal pad configuration Alesis has ever offered.

The feel of the drum heads is pretty good but again Roland is the best for feel.

I spent a good deal of time researching electronic kits and ended up looking at both the Roland V-Drum series and the Alesis DM series. Not having a few thousand dollars to spend on a kit I had to go with the best value for the money I did have. The DM-10 X ended up being the one to get. For me I wanted good feeling drums to trigger outside kits as well as good quality sounds internally. I use the Roland V-Drums as the bases for comparison as they are pretty much the Cadillac of electronic drums, and they come in various flavors to suit different budgets. The closest V-Drum that compares in price is the TK-9 series. So how does it measure up?

Drum Feel: V-Drums - There is no getting around it. The Roland V-Drum series is the best feeling electronic drums you can find today. They are also one of the most expensive. The mesh heads can't be beat, that's for sure. Now Alesis' RealHead pads have gotten a pretty tough time trying to compete what with the original ones feeling better than a rubber pad, but were more rigid than a natural drum. The DM-10 X... improves on this.

Still not close to V-Drum quality and still can get a bit stiff feeling in certain situations, however I compared these pads to the DM-10 Pro kit and I do feel an improvement. These new pads are also thinner than previous drums. If you modify the RealHead drums with a mesh head conversion (DMDrummer has instructions) you get a LOT closer to the right feel, but the V-Drum still inches out ahead. [NOTE: If any of you are planning on getting this kit with the mesh upgrade in mind please note that due to the drum pads different design you will have to use a mod specific to the DM-10 X. I will update when I do the upgrade myself.

I have wanted to get electronic drums for many years but was unwilling to spend 3 grand or more on a Roland set or compromise and get one of the cheaper toy like sets. For me the DM10X is a perfect fit. I have had my DM10X for about a month and a half. Here is my current opinion on the components:

Sound Module:
The sound module is great. It's easy to change the "voice" of each drum/cymbal to whatever you want. Go crazy and trigger a bass drum sound from your hi-hat. On most of the drum sets I tweak the levels and don't use the default settings. Making adjustments is a piece of cake. Also, I have made recordings on my mac laptop using both a midi/usb interface and a straight line-in interface. Both work fine. I normally record using the midi interface. When playing recordings back in Garage band or Logic I just use one of the software provided kits. Eventually I will try out sending the midi events back to the sound module for playback.

Hi-Hat:
I was expecting that the hi-hat pedal action and corresponding sounds wouldn't come close to a real hi-hat. To my delight the pedal works great and the sounds are excellent. I can practice my favorite open/close hi-hat groves with no problem. The pedal may move around on you depending upon the floor surface. I used a small dumbbell to solve that.

Cymbals:
Excellent design. They feel great.

Bass Drum:
Based on other reviews I knew before I even ordered the set that the pads were pretty loud. I found that when playing the bass drum it sounded like I was hammering on a wood table. I live in an apartment so this could be an issue. Thus, I took a laptop "sleeve", filled it with a combo of hard and soft foam padding and strapped it to the bass drum.

Long story short - there are so many people leaving bad comments for this kit, and yes, it's not perfect, but it's not too far away from it. For the price and value you get from the Alesis DM10x, there is no better choice out there if you are in the market for electric drums. Assembly is not too difficult if you are an experienced drummer; pads are louder than other e-kits but still very quiet and mesh head conversion available which will silence it more.

Long story - heads up! this DOES NOT come with a throne (chair/stool), sticks, or bass drum pedal. Also, if you are a beginner I think this is still a great kit to buy, however, it's going to be harder to setup unless you have someone that can speak drum language because you have know what a snare drum, hi hat, tom, crash and all those things are in order to properly follow the assembly instructions. People online kept saying that this kit did not come with instructions and it came in a smaller size box than they expected...WRONG. If we are talking about the same kit, it does come with instructions that are easy to follow and the box is huuuge, i would guestimate a couple feet long and few feet wide and very heavy.

As for other features, the feel of the drums are the best I've played. Just like everyone else, i too went to several guitar centers and played all the electric drums they had set up to see what each one felt and sounded like. My search started with me almost going with the simmons sd5k, (i was also looking at the yamaha dtx series and some lower end roland and alesis models) but I reallllllly don't like those rubber pads that most electric drums have and I wanted something with one more tom and crash so when i switch to acoustic I could implement what I practiced very easily.
