Serious Setup

With the DM10 X Kit we've included a comprehensive set of large drum and cymbal pads, and an all-new XRack. The DM10 X Kit is designed to offer capabilities and features previously only available on kits costing thousands more. The DM10 X Kit features an expansive six-drum, four-cymbal configuration with sizes and spatial relationships that will feel natural to acoustic and electronic drummers alike: a 12-inch snare, two 10-inch toms, two 12-inch floor toms, a 12-inch hi-hat, a 16-inch, three-zone ride cymbal and two 14-inch crash cymbals.

Serious Support

Designed with an emphasis on performance and adaptability, the DM10 X Kit's all-new XRack is rugged, chrome-plated and features an ultra-solid four-post design. New Alesis quick-release clamps secure each pad in place and allow you to rearrange your setup in seconds without tools and without having to take the rack apart. A few turns of a T-bolt is all it takes to release a clamp and move a pad. The DM10 X Kit's snare pad comes with a separate, fully adjustable snare stand that allows you to place the snare pad precisely where you want it.

Serious Surfaces

The DM10 X Kit also features Alesis' acoustic-feeling RealHead pads in 10 and 12-inch sizes. The dual-zone pads feature real mylar drumheads and real triple-flanged counterhoops for the feel you demand. The snare and tom pads are dual zone, enabling you to perform rimshots, rim clicks or assign other sounds such as cymbals, gongs and cowbells on the tom rims. You can use virtually any single or double kick pedal with the RealHead Kick Pad, or split the DM10's kick input with a Y-cable and connect an optional second kick pad for the pedal feel you prefer.

Serious Smarts

At the core of the DM10 X Kit is the groundbreaking Alesis DM10 module. The DM10 hosts a built-in sequencer, metronome, top-panel mixer, and a variety of outputs. It also includes more than 1,000 uncompressed, sample-based sounds that were produced using Alesis' proprietary Dynamic Articulation multi-sample technology.

Not only does the DM10 deliver lightning-fast, uber-accurate tracking, the widest dynamic range of any module, incredibly drummer-friendly operation, a massive input section, but it also has the most realistic, natural sound set available in any drum module. Dig deeper into the DM10 module you'll find some of the most in-demand acoustic drum sounds from legendary drum brands, a huge arsenal of top producers' go-to snare drums, real American, Canadian, Chinese, and Turkish cymbals, and a choice selection of classic drum machine and electronic percussion sounds that have fueled the biggest hit records.

Serious Samples

Discerning ears will notice that each sound is actually a series of different samples; multiple dynamic-level samples and articulations are all built in so as you play harder and softer, the drum or cymbal changes its timbre, not just its volume. This engineered realism is known as Dynamic Articulation, an Alesis exclusive.

You can play with or without reverb for different room sounds and enjoy a wide variety of rimshots, rim clicks and different stick-placement sounds on the cymbals. For example, a hi-hat's sound depends on a number of factors: how open or closed the pedal is, how hard it is struck, and other variables resulting in 40 different sounds--plus foot chick and heel splash.

Put simply, the DM10 X Kit has the most generous drum and cymbal pad configuration Alesis has ever offered.

I spent a good deal of time researching electronic kits and ended up looking at both the Roland V-Drum series and the Alesis DM series. Not having a few thousand dollars to spend on a kit I had to go with the best value for the money I did have. The DM-10 X ended up being the one to get. For me I wanted good feeling drums to trigger outside kits as well as good quality sounds internally. I use the Roland V-Drums as the bases for comparison as they are pretty much the Cadillac of electronic drums, and they come in various flavors to suit different budgets. The closest V-Drum that compares in price is the TK-9 series. So how does it measure up?

Drum Feel: V-Drums - There is no getting around it. The Roland V-Drum series is the best feeling electronic drums you can find today. They are also one of the most expensive. The mesh heads can't be beat, that's for sure. Now Alesis' RealHead pads have gotten a pretty tough time trying to compete what with the original ones feeling better than a rubber pad, but were more rigid than a natural drum. The DM-10 X... improves on this.

Still not close to V-Drum quality and still can get a bit stiff feeling in certain situations, however I compared these pads to the DM-10 Pro kit and I do feel an improvement. These new pads are also thinner than previous drums. If you modify the RealHead drums with a mesh head conversion (DMDrummer has instructions) you get a LOT closer to the right feel, but the V-Drum still inches out ahead. [NOTE: If any of you are planning on getting this kit with the mesh upgrade in mind please note that due to the drum pads different design you will have to use a mod specific to the DM-10 X. I will update when I do the upgrade myself.

I am a long time drummer and will always prefer acoustic drums; however, edrums do provide excellent practice and recording opportunities. Having a wife and young son and being busy with work and life, I usually only get a chance to practice late at night. For years I just couldn't practice on the kit but then I got into edrums (note, I still gig on acoustic kits). I started with a Pintech kit that had a module from Pintech (EZ)- I moved to an Alesis D4, then a Yamaha DTX2.0 and then a Roland TD6V- the kit was nice for practice, but I was never satisfied with the way ghost notes were expressed (etiher no sound at all or way too loud even when striking very softly). I also found the mesh head too boncey to use for a practice kit, but that is my personal opion- many people love mesh heads (they are quieter, feel good, and can be much easier to play faster). Since I use an ekit to practice I really don't want it to be easier to play faster - I don't want to try to execute something on a gig (while I'm playing acoustics) and find that I can't really do it on a straight up kit.
I had a lot of experience with Alesis' D4 and DM5 modules and knew that they were solid (there are still guys using D4 with acoustic triggers- they really are solid units). WHen the DM10 came out I was very interested- especially given the price.
I needed to replace some components on my ekit (frankenkit) and decided that it was time to move to a new kit altogether. When Aleis came out with the DM10 Studio 2011 (four leg rack) I new it was time to pull the trigger- then when it went on sale a couple weeks ago (down to an incredible $799) there was no way I could NOT buy it (the module itself is $699, which I think is a great price for what you get).

I've had my eye on the Alesis Dm10 for a couple of years, the price has come down a bit and I was finally read to dish out a good chunk of change for a solid investment. I've been playing drums on and off for 15 years and owned many kits, both acoustic and electric. This is by far the most versatile kit you can get for the money. This can do everything that an acoustic drum set can do, but a lot more quietly (or just as loud if you'd like it to).

Let's start from the ground up.

It comes shipped to your door in a very large box, it weighs 73 pounds I think. I took pictures of the box before I opened it because it was beat up, UPS sucks. Despite the box being mangled a bit, all of the contents appeared to be in great condition, Alesis has it professionally packed. There is a 0% chance you could get all of the components back into the same box once you take the drum set out and set it up though, don't even try it. I didn't have any problems, once it was set up, it worked like a charm.

My recommendation is to put the box in a different room than where you intend to set the drum set up, there are a ton of pieces and it could be a mess with all of the boxes. Every single component is individually wrapped, I took them all out of their packaging and laid them out near where the drum set was going to be setup. The directions suck a little bit, but you should be fine as long as you aren't an idiot. A lot of the frame pieces look the same and they aren't numbered or lettered, just pay attention to how many connecting brackets there are on each piece. The two main supports for the center of the frame are identical, except one has 4 brackets and one has 3. The one with 4 is the side you attach the snare to.
