I needed to digitize my Mom's cassettes to Computer/CD, so I thought I would try the Alesis TapeLink USB. Once I received the Alesis TapeLink USB and took it out of the box, I found that the left cassette door was sticking out on one side. I was angry and ready to send it back and had read an internet review where someone with a similar problem, had returned the Alesis TapeLink USB. I said to myself I think it's just off it's hinge on one side and pushed firmly but carefully. It pushed right in and was fine after that. Anyway, it doesn't weigh much and that may be why others say that it is cheaply made. I installed the various software, (Ez Audio Converter, Audacity & Sound Soap) on both my Mac & PC and they work really well. Besides it not having PITCH control, I was actually impressed with everything else and will not be returning this. More importantly it allows you to save the sound files in various formats such as .WAV or MP3 files. I've read that .MP3 files degrade when copied, however .WAV files should maintain there quality as they are not compressed. Before buying this, I almost bought the Teac AD-800 CD Player & Cassette Deck with USB. It had pitch control and seemed to be built better, but it did not come with any software and only saved .MP3 files to the USB port. I want the option to save the file in whatever format I choose!!!

just get a cord and a casette instead,

this machine does nothing to make you life easier. get a casette player and patch to your computer's mic. you'll have to learn the free softward audacity which is anyway free on the net. there was no instructions or guidance on how to make a better download of your casette either so you're only a $150 less rich. i'm returning mine and and i'll try to figure out the audacity software myself.
