Beyond that it is just an expensive pot that doesn't have the usual features of a Tea kettle.
You can't pour water until you grab the hot plastic bird whistle and pull it out. With hot stream gushing out this is an interesting game. We went through a couple "birds" before we got one that even whistled and as many others have said, it doesn't sound like a bird. It sounds like the whistle of a guy who was just at the dentist. It also has a cheap wire spring clip and lasts about a month. We have some Alessi stuff. Some is good, some is like this, overpriced... way way overpriced. Did I mention that it is not worth the money.
This kettle was considered a classic piece of modern art to merit a spot at the Musem of Modern Art in New York City (I believe the version there is the anodized one which is no longer sold in the USA).
If you lose the whistle, you can replace it for under $15.00 depending where you purchase it from.
If you do not care about a beautiful piece of art in your kitchen then this kettle is not for you.
September 24, 2011: I am adding this last piece of information to my earlier review from 2009. Note: it is very important that the lid is properly fastened to the body of the kettle. You'll hear a click to know that you've done it properly. If there is any opening from the improperly placed lid, the steam from the boiling water will escape up top and the whistle will NOT whistle. There is a real danger that unbeknownst to you, the water is boiling away and you did not hear anything, leading to all the water steaming away, until the whistle melt it is after all made of plastic) and the metal buckle from the overheated dried out kettle. Please take the extra care of fastening the lid to the body of the kettle until you hear that click.
