3.0 out of 5 stars Aleuts: Survivors of teh Bering Land Bridge, November 9, 2007

This review is from: Aleuts: Survivors of the Bering Land Bridge (Case Studies in Cultural Anthropology) (Paperback)
This is a great, short, easy to read, look at the Aleuts at a time when a scientific approach was used by outsiders. Not that Aluets can't tell their story well. It's just that they are biased, as anyone is when they write about themselves. It was also written at a time when Native peoples weren't thought to be more righteous than anyone else. (Not that they aren't righteous, they just aren't MORE righteous.) It is also old, which means that the way the people lived was nearly 40 years closer to their subsistence lifestyle of 100 years ago. However, what the book lacks is new discoveries and new findings. Nevertheless, its a good place to start learning about Aleuts. Then read some new books by outsiders, and some books written by the Aleuts about the Aleuts. Then you'll have a pretty good foundation.
