Editorial Reviews

Review

Cold Energy review from Bookviral.
It's a breathless race against time in Cold Energy, the new novel from author James M. Corkill.  The second novel to feature Alex Cave, Corkill is certainly mastering the art of suspense whilst demonstrating his ability to craft a well-researched and intriguing plotline. Yes, the main event requires the suspension of disbelief, but Corkill cleverly tempers this with fact that creates a genuine sense of authenticity, rapidly building intrigue and tension amongst his characters as they search for the origins of an alien phenomenon that threatens the entire planet. Certainly, a highly engrossing tale that fans of Clive Cussler and the late Tom Clancy will enjoy, but Corkill has his own distinctive style of writing. He definitely doesn't spare the action, but he also likes to dally in the detail which will appeal to readers with an interest in science and he has a genuine knack for creating highly memorable characters. Alex Cave undoubtedly shines throughout, but every hero needs a villain and Corkill serves up a delightfully wretched individual in John Dieter who proves an able catalyst for the jeopardy that abounds. As a sequel Cold Energy works really well and undeniably hints of exciting releases to come from author James M Corkill. It is highly recommended.

About the Author

I'm a retired Federal Firefighter from Naval Air Station on Whidbey Island in Washington State, USA. While I lived on the island, I was fortunate to meet a famous horror writer named Hugh B. Cave, who became my mentor. Sadly, he passed away before I published my first novel, Dead Energy.

In 2001 my wife was diagnosed with terminal cancer and wanted to see me published before she passed away. I'll never forget her smile when that first sample paperback arrived, but three months later she was gone. I became deeply depressed after losing my soul mate and stopped writing. Two years later, I retired from the Fire Department.

My depression lasted for eight years and I drank heavily, and then one day a stranger read an old copy of Dead Energy and thought I should start writing again. It was just the encouragement I needed at just the right moment. The next day I quit drinking and began rewriting Dead Energy with a new ending as the start of the Alex Cave Series. I re-published Dead Energy in Nov. 2013, and began writing episode 2, Cold Energy, published in Jan. 2014, and episode 3, Red Energy, published in June 2014.

Now I live in the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina, with a wonderful view from my writing desk.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Sequel to Dead Energy December 17, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Sometimes a book series leans heavily on prior books and subsequent books. In this series, book one is standalone, but book two leaves you with a cliff hanger, and you'll just have to wait for book three to get the entire epic adventure. Such is life, I totally enjoyed Dead Energy, and I totally enjoyed Cold Energy, regardless of the cliff hanger. At least with this one, we are likely to get book three within a year, which is a helluva lot better than the wait I've had with a number of other books in series.

It's a shame that some great stories like this go unnoticed while just about any subsequent books written by someone like Tom Clancy (may he rest in peace) get sold by the millions, even though the life is completely out of them. I would far rather read fresh material from a completely new author than read a rehash of the same theme, same thoughts, same materials we so often get from "famous" authors. Give James Corkill a try. His stories are fresh and original, and full of life. You won't regret it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Starts poorly, gets going in the middle, ends well March 23, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
SUMMARY

Strange, inexplicable weather patterns threaten human life as we know it. As various government agencies struggle to find a solution to this madness, they all converge on a single man: Alex Cave, a professor of geophysics, whose previous experience with ancient alien artifacts makes him the only man capable of solving this mystery and ending these ecological disasters before they threaten mankind. He joins the crew of the intrepid ship, "Mystic," in a race against time to recover the alien technology before it wipes us all out; but, unfortunately for Our Heroes, other crew members have their own plans for the voyage...

THE GOOD...

1) Let's start with the obvious: SCIENCE!

This book has a lot of SCIENCE. And yes, the "all caps" is necessary. You'll learn quite a bit from the details in here, including stuff on plate tectonics, volcanology, meterology, deep sea diving with submarines and remotely-controlled robots... and more.

2) Great momentum

Although the story flounders at the beginning, at a certain point it begins to hum along. There is a definite sense of tension that increases over time. Seriously, it got better and better as it went along. The plot was racing toward the latter quarter of the book.

3) A great twist in the middle

Almost two thirds of the way in the story changes quite a bit, and the twist makes things ever so much more fun. We were surprised when we encountered the change in the narrative, and were thrilled to follow where it led us.

4) A smashing ending

In keeping with the momentum of the story, there is a satisfying ending that makes the reader happy to have read it all. Natural disasters abound and Our Heroes face mortal peril. Will they get out alive?

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Adventure December 26, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
First, I don't pretend to understand all the technical aspects of Mr. Corkill's books so I just go along for the ride and hope for a good story. In many ways this is better than the first one but it is very helpful to read Dead Energy (the first book in the series) before you get to this one. In fact, if you can stand it, buy the first one and this one and wait for the third before you start on them, because the story will flow smoother and you'll have the added benefit of not having to wait to find out "the rest of the story".
A couple of minor details - some of the dialog is a bit jerky and doesn't sound right, and for the second time Mr. Corkill introduces a female character who appears to be a bit flighty with her affections.
Do give this series a try. Unless Mr. Corkill suddenly tanks with his writing, his books will be on my "must read" list as he continues to bring us adventures.

James Corkill doesn't disappoint in this second installment of the Alex Cave Adventures. Just as in the first book, Dead Energy, Cold Energy is full of adventure, suspense, science fiction, and excitement. Where the first book had extreme survivalists and doomsday apocalypse with riots in the streets, the second book has pirates and extreme weather phenomenon. If you enjoyed the first book, you'll love the second book.

Alex Cave is at it again with a new group of cohorts...mostly new faces but some familiar faces as well. The author does a great job maintaining the character development of Alex through the second book. We learn a little more about him, but he's still the same Alex we cheered for in the first book.

One of the marks of a good author is whether or not they can make a sequel be just as good as the first book. James Corkill definitely hits the mark with Cold Energy. Not only is the storyline riveting and make it to where you don't want to put the book down, but the author also does something extraordinary when it comes to writing a serial. The second book meshes so well with the first book, yet it's so strong of a story that it can easily stand by itself. So whether you're a reader who wants to read the series in order, or if you decide to read the series out of order, you can easily do that.
