A true story of struggle and passion,
By
This review is from: With Alex by My Side (Paperback)
I approached this book as a dachshund lover, and found much, much more. By the time I left the last page, I knew intimately the life of a person with epilepsy and the near-miracle of a small dog who is the key to a new and more confident life for his owner. A true story of struggle against adversity and passion for the advancement of a good cause -- assistance dogs. You'll want to fly to Los Angeles to see this wonderful dog for yourself.

Wonderful dog, so so book,
By C. Carlson (Milwaukee, WI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: With Alex by My Side (Paperback)
I bought this book based on the good reviews and based on the fact that I am a dog lover, with dachshunds being my breed of choice. Alex is a wonderful dog, and the fact that he alerts his master to oncoming seizures is amazing. However, the writing style of this book was hard for me to read, and the author repeats himself quite a bit. I'm glad I got to know Alex, but I'll never put myself through reading this book again. Knowing what I do now I wouldn't buy it - I'd borrow it from the library.

An amazing, heartfelt and honest description of the level of affection and mutual trust possible between man and dog...Through Alex, Davis opens our eyes to the untapped potentials of assistance dogs and the sense of freedom and happiness they provide, and educates us about the urgent need for tolerance of these day-to-day canine partners. This is a man's-best-friend story, in the true sense.

Unique true story for dog-lovers!,
By Howard Weinstein (author of "PUPPY KISSE... (Elkridge, MD USA) - See all my reviews

This book is the true story of a miracle: how a little dog helps a writer live with epilepsy by warning of seizures before they happen. Joel Davis's honest account is unique in the painful details of his own disability -- and also as universal as the partnership between people and dogs, dating back thousands of years. Anyone who's ever had any experience with service dogs will appreciate Joel's book, which also serves as a bugle call-to-arms in the crusade to integrate all kinds of assistance dogs into American society. And anyone who simply loves dogs will be touched by the special canine-human bond described in Joel's story.

Assistance dogs enable their human partners to have confidence, independence, and the ability to continue their lives in any way they choose. These canine bravehearts provide eyes, ears, alarms and strength, all while giving their partners the love, loyalty, and devotion of 24-hour companionship. Joel Davis shows us size doesn't matter and that his relationship with Alex, his seizure-alert dog, is special.
