Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 6-8?Gottfried examines Fleming's personal and professional life, from his birth in Scotland in 1881 through his work as a scientist and doctor during the early 20th century to his death in 1955. Fleming's earliest discoveries fell on deaf ears, and only his persistence kept him going. Working with World War I patients, Fleming was able to see up-close the effects of germs and how one might be able to avoid the deaths resulting from infections. Words in the glossary are highlighted in bold in the text. The format is open, and black-and-white photos break up the text throughout. The easy reading and simple explanations of the medical procedures being developed and practiced make this a good choice for readers looking for a short biography of an interesting scientist.?Allison Trent Bernstein, Blake Middle School, Medfield,

The true story of the discovery of the antibacterial effect is doscumented in K. Absolon's "The Antibacterial Effect of the Penicillium Mold. Billroth 1874 * Fleming 1929." A historical documentation!!!
