Book Description

"Fascinating." —The Guardian.

The first biography of the inventor to explore fully Bell's humanitarian as well as his scientific works.

"Watson, come quickly, I need your help!" With these words, immortalized in textbooks and on film, Alexander Graham Bell ushered in the age of telecommunications, in 1866. As far as most people are concerned, Bell's career as an inventor and scientist ends there. Few alive today realize that until his death in 1922, Bell continued to make important contributions in the education of the deaf, phonetics, acoustics, aviation, architectural engineering, animal husbandry, and genetics. He also invented aircraft, the iron lung, a portable device for distilling sea water, the telephonic probe (precursor to the sonograph), and the hydrofoil. Alexander Graham Bell gives us a finely etched portrait of the man who, during his lifetime, was hailed as one of the greatest scientific minds of all time. Mackay has unearthed a great deal of new information about the inventor's early life and provides unique psychological insight into Bell's relationships with his family, his fascination with science, and the roots of his deep and unswerving altruism.

James Mackay (Glasgow, Scotland) is also the author of Burns (awarded the prestigious Saltire Prize), William Wallace: Brave Heart, Michael Collins: A Life and Allan Pinkerton: The First Private Eye.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

The first biography in twenty years of a 20th century inventor second in stature only to Thomas Edison. Though everyone knows Bell invented the telephone, few realize that he also made important contributions in phonetics, acoustics, the education of the deaf, aviation, architectural engineering, animal husbandry, and genetics. Alexander Graham Bell offers new information about the inventor's early life and provides insights into his relationships, his fascination with science, and the roots of his altruism.

1.0 out of 5 stars Alexander Graham Bell: A Life, December 16, 2005
This review is from: Alexander Graham Bell: A Life (Hardcover)
While this is an interesting work, unfortunately it is also fatally flawed. In 2001 the American Historical Association reported upon a complaint that this work is heavily based upon plagiarism. While the AHA rarely reports upon such complaints, in this case the evidence was so clear that they felt compelled to notify the historical community. According to Robert Bruce, the pulitzer prize winning historian whose book,Bell: Alexander Graham Bell and the Conquest of Solitude (Boston, 1973), was the subject of MacKay's actions, MacKay's American publisher withdrew the book and destroyed all copies in stock. Those books which are still in circulation represent the books sold prior to the problem being brought to the attention of the publishers.
