Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

ea. vol: illus. by Gerry Wood. 60p. maps. photogs. bibliog. chron. index. (Life and Times Series). Bookwright Pr, dist. by Watts. Mar. 1986. PLB $10.90. Grade 5-7 Thumbnail biographies are tacked onto the front of general histories. Alexander the Great and the Greeks includes an overview of ancient Greek civilization from 1900 b.c. Montezuma and the Aztecs traces the growth and decline of the Aztec empire. Daniel Boone and the American West outlines American exploration beginning with Leif Ericson and the subsequent stages of the Western movement. Each book is divided into one- and two-page chapters on topics such as home life and entertainment. The books fail as biographies; more detailed information is available in any encyclopedia. Moreover, the information is incomplete to the point of being misleading. Alexander the Great is portrayed only as a "ruthless tyrant" with no explanation of the cultural impact of his conquests. The few pages on Daniel Boone do not explain why he is a "legend." Garish illustrations emphasize the sensational. Facial characteristics are so similar that Zeus looks like a double for Miltiades, Herodotus, Daniel Boone and others. Better material for reports easily can be found elsewhere. Marguerite F. Raybould, Glendale Public Library, Calif.

This book might be boring, but it does help with research projects! I am doing a report on Alexander the Great, and this book told me about his conquests and adventures. I recomend this as a research book. It might not be that great of a freetime book unless you like lots of dates and stuff.
