Books by this author are important--and this book is no exception.

Professor Doctor H.Walter Lack of Berlin has distinguished himself of late by publishing over the past decade a series of books demonstrating his talent for bringing to our attention the important works in the history of botanic illustration.

Alexander Von Humboldt sacrificed both his personal comfort and safety to record for natural history the discoveries of the New World.

While we sit in the comfort of our homes today, it is easy for us to loose sight of this fact. The art of botanic illustration that we enjoy so simply today took toil: blood, sweat and tears, and many mosquito bites, to produce and record.

Quoting von Humboldt: "The house I am in is very old; the thatch is stocked with rats, vampires, scorpions, cockroaches and other pests to society; the floor (being simply mother earth) is undermined by sauba ants, with whom I have had some terrible contests. In one night they carried off as much farinha as I could eat in a month; then they found my dried plants and began to cut them up and carry them off. I have burned them, smoked them, drowned them, trod on them, and in short retaliated in every possible way, so that at this moment I believe not a sauba dares show its face inside the house; but they demand my constant vigilance."

For this, we owe Alexander Von Humboldt our thanks, and Dr.Lack and Prestel has honored him amply with this fine publication of his work.
