Editorial Reviews

Review

“An in-depth, critical examination of McQueen as both a genius mind and wildly talented designer. In short, reading Watt’s book feels equivalent to taking a semester-long lecture class--An incredibly interesting and inspiring course taught by the very best of teacher’s in the field.” (Nylon Magazine)

From the Back Cover

An intimate and revealing look at the personal and professional life of the fashion world's most visionary designer.

This incredible volume strips away the layers of legend surrounding Alexander McQueen, revealing the sartorial genius and the true history of the man who reinvented modern fashion. Uncovering new details about Lee Alexander McQueen's humble childhood in East London, author Judith Watt traces the young designer's ascent—from his graduate collection at Central Saint Martins School of Art and Design to his over-the-top runway shows to the designs he created just days before his death at age forty. Providing new insights into the dark passion and inspiration that guided each fever-pitched runway show, this fully illustrated portrait delivers a truly comprehensive, in-depth look at the most provocative designer of a generation. Illustrated throughout with McQueen's personal drawings and ephemera as well as a mixture of exquisite catwalk and editorial fashion images, Alexander McQueen: The Life and the Legacy is every bit as stunning as the designer himself.

Certainly a necessary addition to someone interested in McQueen's work or contemporary fashion in general. It gives a sense of the timeline and course of his career, though I was disappointed that his menswear collections were almost completely overlooked in this book. McQueen devoted just as much energy and focus into his men's collections as his women's wear and they are an important part of his story which should not have been neglected. As others have mentioned, there is not a lot of deep biographical information in this book...merely a string of anecdotes and brief interview tidbits. Someone else will have to take up the task of telling his life's story. And yes, the writing is a bit thin and uneven when summarizing the collections at times, but this book shines best when it goes into details of the construction of a piece, and when connecting the threads of ideas that encapsulated a particular runway show, be it historical references or details of staging.

I also recommend Jane Mulvagh's biography of Vivienne Westwood as the ultimate read for those seeking a revealing look into the fashion world. It covers the biographical aspect as well as highly detailed information on specific collections and designs, and furthermore it is not all praise and fluff but an actual in-depth investigation of the woman and her work. Very worth seeking out.

I just received the book a little over an hour ago, but after only reading the intro I can tell this will be one of the better books on McQueen. I have every book on McQueen published except for "LOVE LOOKS NOT WITH THE EYES" (only 6 available) This is a book that is insightful and has character, and provides great background detail into Lee and his psyche that other books may mention but skim over and focus on photos of his work. I look forward to the read, I recommend this book to anyone looking for details on the man and not just his work.

What an amazing book. Very well written. Went through every aspect of Alexander McQueen's life and fashion shows. He was an amazing designer with an enticing imagination. He had achieved what others have not. He was fueled with nature, water, birds and death. Will be using this book to write my final paper for my Bachelor's degree. It was an exceptional book with plenty of details to write about.

This book delved deep into all of McQueen's collections. From the beginning until the end. If you are an Alexander McQueen fan like myself, you should read the book.

I bought this last month because I'm very interested in learning about designers. I highly recommend this book, this book walks you through his life and all the work he has done collection by collection. From 1990-2010. I've definitely learned a lot about him and others as well. I really like how they added photos of his collections and what his close friends had to say about what was going on at the time and what Alexander McQueen was thinking as well. Overall very great book and great content. Must buy!

Fascinating inside look at the fashion designers young life, influences and start on Saville Row.
A lot is not revealed about his personal life actually, but you get a good feel for how much he was influenced by art and world culture.
Each collection is discussed in detail, but really could use more illustrations.
A fast read and good companion to a bigger picture centric book.
