GREAT Soundtrack,
By Rachel (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Prokofiev: Alexander Nevsky (Audio CD)
I absolutly loved this soundtrack. The distinctions between the Russian and German theme music is both brilliant and breathtaking. Part of what makes this soundtrack so powerful is its large range of types of music: from the Russian "Folkmusic" to the sweeping theme played at the end of the battle, this soundtrack is both beautiful and interesting to listen to.

A great score composed by one of the greatest composers,
By Lord Luger (Indiana) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Alexander Nevsky (Audio CD)
I must admit: when I listened to this score for the first time about ten years ago, I didn't like it very much, principally because I was so influenced by John Williams and Jerry Goldsmith that I couldn't be able to listen to any other composer or anything which came outside Hollywood. I reviewed another recording of this soundtrack here at amazon - which I acquired at a local CD used store - and in which I claimed I was disappointed and didn't recommed it to everyone. Well, the time has gone by and now I believe this is one of the best scores ever written to the cinema! I'm just writing this in order to revise something I did before and make justice. Congratulations, Mr. Prokofiev.

Prokoviev defined movie scoring,
By
This review is from: Alexander Nevsky (Audio CD)
This is by far one of the best film scores of all time, coupled with the amazing direction of Sergei Eisenstein it makes for an amazing film. Within this soundtrack you can actually feel the presence of the Teutonic knights marching across the frozen lake, the battle music is legendary. Prokoviev was one of the first film scorers, and largely wrote the book as far as technique. You can also hear clearly the influence that Prokoviev has over current film scorers, most notably Danny Elfmann. You can also clearly hear the amount of work that has been stolen by John Williams!
Don't believe me? John Williams is one of the music world's greatest plagiarizers. Listen to the Star Wars music, then go out and listen to Holst's "Planets", especially "Mars". Then listen to Stravisnsky's "Firebird"..then listen to Mendelsohn's 'Wedding March'...

Not bad for being ancient,

Well, the CD is not the best quality in the world, but it's probably about as best as they can do for such an old soundtrack. I loved the 12th track about 3 minutes into the song. If you like kooky music, you'll love this CD.
