Book Description

January 1, 1954 Library of Christian Classics (Paperback Westminster) (Book 2)

This volume in the Library of Christian Classics series offers fresh translations of selected works of Clement and Origen of Alexandria.

Long recognized for the quality of its translations, introductions, explanatory notes, and indexes, the Library of Christian Classics provides scholars and students with modern English translations of some of the most significant Christian theological texts in history. Through these works--each written prior to the end of the sixteenth century--contemporary readers are able to engage the ideas that have shaped Christian theology and the church through the centuries.

5.0 out of 5 stars Execellent collection of Alexandrian works..., March 27, 2000
This review is from: Alexandrian Christianity (Library of Christian Classics) (Paperback)
As the title suggests, this is a collection of works by Christians who lived in the Egyptian city of Alexandria. The following works are included: "On Marriage," and "On Spiritual Perfection" by Clement of Alexandria (which are technically Stromata books III and VII, the former which is only in Latin in the Ante-Nicene Fathers set.), "On Prayer," "Exhortation to Martyrdom," and "Dialogue with Heraclides," by Origen (all three books are absent from the Ante-Nicene Fathers set). There are nice introductions to each book and each author. Chadwick gives very detalied notes and explanations of Origen's "On Prayer." This is an excellent book for 2 reasons. First it is a great sample of the skilled thinkers of Alexandria. Second, it acts as a good supplement to the Ante-Nicene Fathers set.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential Alexandrian Texts, February 9, 2007
By
This review is from: Alexandrian Christianity (Library of Christian Classics) (Paperback)
This excellent volume in the Library of Christian Classics includes an English translation of Origen's Dialogue with Heraclides, recovered in 1941. The work is important for an understanding of Alexandrian theology, and especially for Origen's Christology. Other works included in English are Clement of Alexandria's Stromateis III (On Marriage) and VII (On Spiritual Perfection) and Origen's On Prayer and Exhortation to Martyrdom.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well put together., June 26, 2006
This review is from: Alexandrian Christianity (Library of Christian Classics) (Paperback)
I thought that the writings of Clement was covered quite well. Origen has always been 'long of wind' and yet you need not be a scholar to understand what he said
