Book Description

Alexis grew up feeling like an outsider in her seemingly perfect family. She has a younger brother whom everyone admires, and a gorgeous best friend that every guy seems to desire, leaving her feeling like
she was never quite good enough.

She went off to college with the hope of creating a new life for herself, and thought perhaps she had, only to have everything fall apart just as her senior year was beginning. Reeling from a break-up with her first and only boyfriend, she finds herself feeling more lost than ever.

Things become even more challenging when her brother arrives on her doorstep with a difficult secret that he begs her to keep. Her loyalty to him drives a wedge between Alexis and her long-time best friend and forces her to confront her troubled relationship with her parents.

Relationships both old and new give Alexis the opportunity to find her true self, and perhaps even true love… if she is brave enough to take the leap.

5.0 out of 5 stars Deep Characters Swept Me Away March 7, 2013

As soon as I began this book, I felt that I knew Alexis. She is a young woman seeking to discover herself but confused and distracted in that pursuit by her habit of comparing herself to others. Her struggle for identity and worth are complicated by the difficult relationship she has with her parents, her brother, and her closest circle of friends. Gard provides such emotionally detailed portraits of the characters that I was able develop a deep connection to them. Although this is her first book, it shows great potential and a gift for understanding people. It is a quick and easy read, perfect for moms looking to get away and young adult women seeking encouragement when relationships go astray. Enjoy; for 99 cents, what do you have to lose?

This book really reminded me of Anna Maxted's, Running in Heels. I couldn't put it down, finishing it in less than 24 hours, so you could call it easy to read... But, all the while it dealt - sensitively, humorously and all the more effectively - with some very serious and challenging personal themes. I enjoyed it immensely and have thoroughly recommended it to friends.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best book I've read this year! March 28, 2013

I loved this book and was hooked the whole way through! I'm a sucker for young adult novels and this was the best I've read in a while. I'd say that this is a book that is really worth a shot. What really surprised me,though, was how this was Marian Gard's first ever book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good reason to stay up late! March 9, 2013

This book captured my attention within the first few pages. Alexis is a character who's self esteem could use some help, but she is passionate about her beliefs. While there is romance involved, I felt that this book was really more about her individual journey toward self acceptance. Everyone should be able to relate to her struggles even if you don't agree with her insights and opinions. The book is well written. Marian Gard may be a first time writer, but you will be pleasantly surprised by her natural ability. She writes in such a way that has you swept away into Alexis's world without even realizing you are in it. Anyone who needs a break from life's hardships should read this book, you will be glad you did!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great story but left me hanging May 13, 2013

I really enjoyed Alexis for the story, the characters...a real life type plot. It's not the kind of book though that you can't put down until you finish it...no cliff hanging at each chapter end. I enjoyed it but wanted more. The end was a bit dull.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great characters April 14, 2013

This story hooks you with great character development. The author has wonderfully explored the different levels of relationships between them, giving the reader the opportunity to reflect on their own personal relationships and experiences. While reading it, I was mentally back in college reliving those days, and easily implanting the book characters into my campus and circle of friends.
