Just what the SIP Dr. ordered,

Update 3/22: The phone locks up and does not function, it seems fine, ad your voip number will ring, but the handset just sits there silently... we are unable to use these phones as they are not reliable enough.
------------- I wanted a phone for SIP trunking, not for Skype. That is exactly what i got, this phone does not do Skype as far as i can tell and i am happy about that. The phone has a very strong wifi receiver, it picked up far more wifi points around my home than any other wifi device i have. The setup was a bit complex, but in the end it was not too bad, just that VoIP has confusing temrs that seem to overlap one another for settings. The call clarity is GREAT, the ear peice is perhaps just slightly tinny but overall i rate this unit as being quite good. It does show some signs of being a cheaper no name brand, the display flashes in places during certain menu surfing, but it's nothing really just trivial. I do wonder though if it wil last through the ages (haha). For what we wanted, it is perfect. I will order 3 or 4 more so that we cover all our needs and have a couple of spares waiting. It's a nice size, i don't want some nano phone anyway, and pretty light. I use it with callcentric and it works just fine.

Well I was looking for the absolute cheapest wifi VoIP phone on the net and I think I found it.
It works as it says it does and connected to my Wifi WEP lan without too many issues. does it support WPA2? NO! It has a web interface built in on the phone which I was able to access but couldn't change the settings (which was the point of having the web access onto it) so had to do all the configuration through the phones keypad which was annoying but it could still be done this way. I think it either didn't support the browser (which I tried a few) and/or it was because I am using windows 7. It has an address book which is useful, but can't sync it to my PC for one reason or another, It should be possible though. Phone quality however is very quiet. In talking you have to talk very loudly to be heard clearly (very loudly for me could be a normal volume for an American voice however as I am a bit more softly spoken...) The phone takes a couple seconds to answer when you press the answer key, this isn't a problem once you remember to think about it before answering. The battery doesn't last long at all, perhaps 24 hours with minimal use but if you talk for a couple hours it will either be flat or almost. A couple times it disconnected while in conversation with someone though this could have been our SIP provider, hard to tell... The phone has also 'crashed' a few times too which required a battery removal to get it operational quickly, it could have been left for a while and may come right but thats no good if you need to make a phone call. The cradle for the phone is a little fiddly to insert correctly I inserted it thinking it was on charge but the phone wasn't touching the terminals and it never charged. very annoying, though now I check that its on properly. The range of the wifi though has been good, having a good positioned wifi receiver helps though. It has a facility to run Java applications but can't find out how to load my own, probably through the web interface which I can't get to work!!! I also couldn't find any info about this phone online even on the manufacturers website there was nothing it seemed! All in all I'd give this a 5/10 as it does work 90% of the time but has its quirks. I would recommend this if you are tech savvy on not interested in random problems happening in some circumstances (may be once a week it will do something dumb) Good Luck, Tim (Waitakere City, NZ)

This phone seemed like the perfect solution for having a wireless VoIP phone, but unfortunately it did not support WPA. Seemed pretty cheaply built, too.

This Alfa Wi-fi phone has simple settings and works only in SIP services, not prepared for Skype and Skype doesn't have SIP protocol yet.

I was able to set it up and make a call, it meets the expectation as a SIP phone, but can not be in practical use, battery ran out fast, when it hangs up, I need to pull out the battery to restart, putting the phone into the base is also something difficult, you need to be careful, I believe with a phone, it should be ready anytime to be used, with this phone, I'm not sure if it will work next time I pick it up, to save my trouble i just put it back into box, and it's gathering dust now:(

I am enjoying this phone. Good voice quality. It was easy to set up with my Asterisks box. The only limitation I see so far is that the WiFi only supports WEP 64-bit or 128-bit encryption. Now to see how it holds up over time.

While it does work fairly well with most sip providers it seems to be quite unstable, needing a reboot of the phone every few days.

I purchased the phone on Sunday 18 July 2010 and it arrived promptly today, 22 July 2010.
I just got the phone working and it works fine for now. But I checked the website today, 22 July 2010 and the price has gone down from $49.95 to $39.95 in just a few days. Everything works great but the seller is just not honest. |
