5.0 out of 5 stars An important man, an important CD
This CD is a very important CD as far as modern MPB goes. It is also a CD that you cannot grasp if you don't throw any and all preconceptions about Brazilian music, or pop music, or music in general, out the window. I can understand someone not fully getting Carlinhos' vision, but to altogether dismiss it (music fan in Manhattan) is rather foolish. Carlinhos has...

2.0 out of 5 stars Lively, slick and empty !
C. Brown is an exceptional musician, but despite all his apparent skill and deft musicianship, his recording left me cold. It is a beautiful Disneyfication of Brazil's popular music spectrum. If there is "innovation" on this recording, it is lost in the forest of hyper-self-conscious hipness. Too bad. He'd done so well with M. Monte's recording (Great...

Carlinhos has written songs for Marisa Monte, Caetano Veloso, and has played on albums by just about anyone who is important in current Brazilian music. Also, let's not forget that he is the mastermind behind the Bahian musical troupe Timbalada. He's not going away anytime soon, and his influence on popular Brazilian music won't either.

5.0 out of 5 stars a gem from carlinhos brown!!!, May 5, 1999

I'm a music fan all the way from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This is truly an amazing album from Carlinhos. Great music all round. 'Covered Saints' just beg to be played over & over. Carlinhos is what Brasil music all about (hope that's not too much to say!). I would also recommend interested listener to go & get Sergio Mendes' Brasileiro CD. It features Carlinhos Brown on several tracks and they are excellent soothing stuffs from him, in particular the track 'Bara Bare'. Right on, Carlinhos! Now, 'scuse me, I'm going to get me the new one from him, Omelete Man! from Hakim Amir

5.0 out of 5 stars A Breakthrough Musical Effort, July 17, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Alfagamabetizado (Audio CD)
This album is probably as important a work as the Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper" or Milton Nascimento's "Clube da Esquina 2." However, if your ear is not tuned to Brazilian and world music, you probably won't be able to fathom that. Brown's fusion of Bahian axe music, northeastern rhythms, bossa nova, rock, funk and reggae is really groundbreaking. To truly understand what he has done, I would recommend perusing the book "The Brazilian Sound," which explains the significance of the work quite clearly and also is a great guide to Brazil's music of the last few decades.

5.0 out of 5 stars An audiophile workout for your stereo and an ear opening cd., February 4, 1999

This review is from: Alfagamabetizado (Audio CD)
This amazing cd has not been off my cd player much since I purchased it. Like the best music it takes you into another world - a tapestry of sound and textures where traditional styles and instruments meet the cutting edge of Brazilian pop and create something new. With 16 tracks and 73 minutes of music you might expect the occasional filler of lame track. Carlinhos Brown however, consistantly delivers - a wonderful feast of rythym and melody with a production/sound clarity that is above average. Put this cd on and be taken away. Beatiful ballads, drum batteries, berimbua, salsa, funk - this cd is 100% ear candy that keeps getting better the more you listen and transcends the language barrier. paul barrett

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow. Simply wow., October 4, 1998

Listening to this album is like wandering around the alleys of an ancient and historic town - each time you turn a corner you make another beautiful discovery. In my opinion, there's hardly a weak note on the entire disk, and you'll find a wonderful variety of music with influences including his traditional Brazilian roots, Carribean rythyms, 70's funk and 90's house. Between Karnak, Carlinhos and football, Brazil is having a good year.

5.0 out of 5 stars !!!, December 20, 2004
This review is from: Alfagamabetizado (Audio CD)
carlinhos is a genius. this album, in my opinion, covers the entire spectrum of human emotions, some of which i never knew even existed untill late one night (after 9 months in brazil) on an island beach in the south of brazil, with this album and a good friend and the waves and the stars...

i'd heard this album before, but i never got it untill the next morning- i woke up practically levitating in bed, carlinhos pulsing in my bones....

so while music lover picked up on track 12, which i think is the most accessible, others are on a whole other level that is rarely achieved anywhere, by anyone. yes carlinhos' lyrics are nonsense- so is shakespeare, on many levels- but the lyrics capture a sense of the absurd, surreal, dreamy, and a real brazilian sense of humor. BUY THIS ALBUM!!!

Some may disagree with me, but I have to say that this album is the best by Carlinhos Brown. I like it much better than both Omelet Man and hiw new one, Bahia do Mundo - mito e verdade. To me, Carlinhos Brown is kind of a Brazilian Lenny Kravitz with a similar groovy, dance-rock style but with a Brazilian spice to it. As with most Brazilian artists, the CD can't get away without having at least a couple slow, cheesy tracks but if you get over how light and pop-y they are, the slow songs on this album are almost good. Other than that one complaint, 90% of this CD is nothing but energetic, artistic, funky, rocking great Brazilian beats. Highly recommended.

the title for my review says it all. This is one of the most beautiful, exciting, and moving albums I've ever heard. A percussionist friend recommended it to me years ago, and I've always been thankful. If you think you might like it, just get it. You'll probably love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Five Stars, but of course, anything less would be nonsense., April 8, 1999

Simply, Carlinhos Brown is one of the most important musicians that Brazil has produced in this decade. Brown's music equals Innovation. It is important to note, though, that this equation is valid because of the Author's humble attention to the traditional sounds of both, Brazil and Latin America. In light of his yet unreleased sophomore effort, Omelet Man, it is important to relisten to this classic (for all of us who already have it) --If you don't, and you like brazilian music: What are you waiting for?

Not since Prince in the eighties have I heard an artist with such vision and control of his craft. Carlinhos Brown has an incredible ear for melodie and syncopation, and has created a truly beautiful and funky record. I will listen to this disk for years to come.
