Every 15 years or so, I try a thermos again. Each time, I decide that the gadget doesn't work well enough to be useful. I bought this Alfi Opal White Lacquered Brass Thermal Carafe with Chrome Trim, 5-Cup. I am here to report nothing has changed and I am not sure it matters how much money you spend on a thermos.

I was looking for a carafe that would let me keep hot coffee in my office during the morning. Just leaving the coffee maker on warm doesn't work for me; invariably the coffee ends up tasting "overcooked" and is not drinkable. Theoretically, a fine thermos should solve this -- keep it hot without cooking it. So I bought this Alfi after much research. It's nicely made and handsome to look at but note that there is something you can't see from the photo. The lid closes down a light colored rubber stopper into the mouth of the carafe. That rubber stopper quickly becomes stained by the coffee and is not too appetizing to look at.

I did everything I could too make this carafe work. I heated up the carafe insides with hot water and poured it out before I put hot coffee in it. Still the coffee does not really stay as hot as I want. I think this carafe is probably fine for storing cold water near your desk. We tend to be less picky about the temperature of cold water that the temp. of coffee. But for coffee lovers, I think there is no answer except to make fresh pot. I will try again in 15 years to see if things have gotten better. For right now, the Winner and Still Champion is the second law of thermodynamics. Heat will flow from a warm body to a cooler body. My coffee just got cold. Damn entropy anyway!
