The Modern Classic No. 1 Shiny Carafe features the AlfiDur vacuum hard glass liner; high-quality, scratchproof, transparent, acrylic body and screw-stopper; and easy, one-hand operation.
The double-walled AlfiDur vacuum hard glass liner keeps hot drinks hot and cold drinks cold. Before assembly each glass liner undergoes an operational test. Other outstanding features include:
- The hinged lid provides single-hand operation and is food safe.
- The twin-walled AlfiDur toughened hard glass liner creates a vacuum between the walls, allowing neither heat nor cold to escape; 100-percent performance tested.
- The seal prevents the escape of radiant heat.
- The body of the flask is comprised of high-quality raw materials e.g. copper and brass. Top quality is achieved by hand craftsmanship.
- The seals/screw fittings are food-safe and quality-tested. Each part can be replaced or repaired.
The Designer
The designer responsible for the Modern Classic No. 1 Shiny Carafe is Ole Palsby--a name associated with a quite fantastic career. The Danish top-designer from Copenhagen is entirely self-trained. He began his design career as the proprietor of a shop selling household goods. The shortcomings of some products he used kept him thinking about new aesthetic possibilities in this area, with great success!
Today, Ole Palsby is one of the most-respected designers in the world and some of his creations, like the Alfi Spherical jug, are even on display at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Alfi and Ole Palsby liaison have already produced three major successes. The hat-trick was achieved with the Spherical jug, Class No. 1, and Fresh Bottle, all of which won top-design awards. Ole Palsby describes his philosophy in the following words: "I firmly believe that basic shapes are present in our subconscious. The simplicity of the sphere gives pleasure. Classic forms will always be in demand."

I have 2 of these. I can make my tea at 7 a.m. and at 7 p.m. it is still hot enough to require caution in drinking. I did discover a flaw with the screw down cap. If your boiling water is poured in to the top and you quickly screw on the cap it is possible to cross thread it, making it difficult from that time forth to open and close. If after waiting several minutes before screwing on the cap this can be avoided. I'm very pleased with the unit and have ordered more for Christmas gifts.

It's a beautiful design and color but that's as far as it goes in the world of coffee carafes. The handle on top is very thin and requires some strength in turning the top (I've had to go so far as to utilizing a screwdriver or knife as a lever!). It keeps the coffee moderately warm but not hot, but that may be a by-product of my fear of really screwing the top on too tightly. If looks are what you are after, this is the one for you. If you require your coffee to be kept with some modicum of heat retention, look elsewhere!

I only need a carafe to keep a pot of coffee warm over the course of the morning, and this item does the trick. The lid does seal tightly, but I've not have any problems with opening it. However, by afternoon, the coffee is cool -- my all-metal thermos works better at keeping hot liquids warm longer. Nevertheless, coffee doesn't keep well in a carafe more than two or three hours, anyway, so this shortcoming is immaterial to me. What I really like about the Alfi Modern Classic is its looks. I have the cobalt colored one and it is gorgeous.If you want to make coffee directly into the carafe (which is best for maximum heat retention), you'll need a drip filter with a special narrow bottom. Alfi makes one, but charges a ridiculous $[...] for it. [...] Six months later: This carafe is now leaking from the bottom because the inner container has come detached from the plastic exterior case. I'd downgrade this product to two stars for flimsiness.
