Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Writer/director Charles Shyer's reinvention of the beloved 60's morality tale about a serial-womanizer's quest for meaning in life is musically rooted in a voice that's lived the experience: Mick Jagger. And if the Stones' oft-cliched frontman seems a decidedly left-field choice as film scorer, his chemistry with collaborator/former Eurythmics musical spark Dave Stewart yields a surprisingly warm, often introspective slate of songs and atmospheric underscore. Jagger's solo work has often been muddied by chasing the pop production zeitgeist of the moment, but his efforts with Stewart here largely turn on a stripped-down, organic folk-blues sensibility that can't escape mostly positive parallels with the Stones' own acoustic oeuvre. Soul singer Joss Stone turns in a masterfully bluesy cover of the original film's hit Bacharach-David theme song that belies her teenage years (also interpolating it into Stewart/Jagger's "Wicked Time," which also features noted Jamaican rapper "Nadz" Seid), while Sheryl Crow duets with Jagger on the single version of the song-score's thematic anchor, "Old Habits Die Hard." -- Jerry McCulley

3.0 out of 5 stars I gave it 3 stars because it is misleading..., August 24, 2006
By SevenOneEight "seven-one-eight" (Brooklyn, NY United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Alfie (Audio CD)
I listened to the entire soundtrack and the music is decent. I am not a huge jagger fan but like the sound and syle of the music.

-HOWEVER-
BE careful and BE warned: This may not be what you are looking for if you just watched the movie:
Why to Movie/ Record Studios do this? Where is the great MUSIC from the MOVIE? You know, The Iseley Brothers' (For the Love of You) and Teddy Pendegrass'(Love TKO)songs???

And WHERE is the one song that everyone keeps asking about, but is mysteriously missing from the "soundtrack": The jazzy, cool song where Alfie and (Liz)Susan Sarandon are drinking in her apartment and seducing each other...? BTW, The name of that song is :

"The Beat Goes On"
By The Buddy Rich Band

(Originallay by Sonny and Cher, believe it or not!)
-You're welcome, 'cause I know you have been looking for it too :)You can find it on Buddy Rich Band compilations here on Amazon, there are several versions ( Live/ studio, etc.). I love the web.

Guys, give the people what they want and stop making it so hard to find things. The reason you used that song in the movies and the others listed above is because they are awesome ( even you thought so). If you didn't want to pay some licensing fee for those songs to have them on the score or if you have some exclusive deal with Mick Jagger to be the only one listed as the composer of the "soundtrack" then make a supplemental "SCORE" or give us the info so we can find it.

Again, I like Jagger and the music on this disc is good, its just misleading, and in that sense, disappointing. Now go get that Buddy Rich Band song you wanted in the first place and stop wasting time reading reviews about this "soundtrack".

5.0 out of 5 stars Not Just A Soundtrack, October 20, 2004
By Rick E. Lund (West Point, Utah USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Alfie (Audio CD)
Wow, I was very surprised at how good this CD is. While not seeing the movie yet, it's hard to know how the songs fit, but this disc does not play like a soundtrack at all. This is some of the better stuff Mick Jaggar & Dave Stewart have done in awhile. Standout tracks are, Old Habits Die Hard, Lonely Without You (This Christmas) which by the way is a great Christmas song, Darkness Of Your Love, which is performed by Gary Mudbone & Dave Stewart, and a great rendition of the song Alfie by Joss Stone, who also duets with Mick on Lonely Without You. This is a soundtrack that does not sound like just a soundtrack. A must for Mick Jaggar fans, but also a great bunch of songs put together. Also has a bonus version of Old Habits Die Hard with Sheryl Crow.

3.0 out of 5 stars This soundtrack CD is good, but not at all complete, March 8, 2005
By Mr. Plow (Springfield, US) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Alfie (Audio CD)
I agree with the other reviewers that the music on this CD is wonderful.

Please be aware however that it only includes the movie songs by Jagger and Stewart.
It does not include some songs used in the movie that I consider legendary:

- THE BEAT GOES ON drummed by Buddy Rich and sung by his 12year old daughter, accompanying the love scene of Alfie and Liz.

- LOVE TKO by Hall & Oates and FOR THE LOVE OF YOU by The Isley Brothers, accompanying the love scene of Alfie and Lonette.

- The two pieces that accompany the first scene when Alfie wakes up and dresses, and the scene when Alfie drives and talks to Liz at the same time ("I lost the signal for a second there")
I suppose they has been written exclusively for the movie because it is totally in tune with the plot, fingersnaps, etc. There are also variations of it later in the movie.
If anyone know the title and performer of this fabulous jazz track, please post it here as a review.
