Thrilling, May 13, 2002
This review is from: Alfred Brendel II (Great Pianists of the 20th Century Series) (Audio CD)
Brendel offers electrifying performances of Beethoven's boldest, most experimental works for piano: the "Hammerklavier Sonata" and the "Diabelli Variations." These are not Beethoven's most popular works, but they are among his most profound, and they repay repeated listening. Alfred Brendel brings to these works what is often called humor -- but is really absolute alertness and aliveness to Beethoven's experiments in unpredictability.
If you don't already own recordings of the "Hammerklavier" and the "Diabellis," Brendel is a superb choice. If you do, you will find these interpretations a revelation. (Brendel has also recorded these works on Vox, but those performances -- though very good indeed -- are not the equal of the ones here.)
