Editorial Reviews

Review

"Impressive. . . . Following biographical and critical essays, the bulk of the volume is taken up with what can only be described as the definitive Hitchcock filmography, including complete credits for each film and extremely long synopses which are obviously based on viewings of the extant films." -- Anthony Slide, Classic Images

"Indispensable. . . . Long anticipated, . . . this book will be prized by scholars and students." -- Leonard J. Leff, Film Quarterly

"This is a book every film teacher would like to own." -- Linda Williams, author of Figures of Desire --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

From the Inside Flap

"A concise and intelligent synthesis of what we know and think about Hitchcock and a road map to future work on the subject. . . . There is no complete index to Hitchcock's career like this one and critics and historians will mine Sloan's work with enormous profit. . . . The 'Critical Survey' section constitutes an invaluable contribution to the project of metacriticism."--Matthew Bernstein, author of Walter Wanger, Hollywood Independent --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

Given the industry of Hitchcock film criticism, this standard reference work is inevitably outdated from the moment of its publication and subsequent editions. Nevertheless, for older articles, essay, and books it is indispensable. Sloan includes very full synopses, with only few factual errors, of every film, from the most obscure to the most famous. Highly recommended--all the more if you can secure a high quality, secondhand edition.
