Why Did Company Edit From LP?,
By Trumpy (Melbourne FL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Alfred Hitchcock's Presents: Ghost Stories for Young People/Famous Monsters Speak (Audio CD)
I made the mistake of owning the "Alfred Hitchcock" LP so I know it inside out. It was well worn so I was happy to see this on CD. Imagine my disappointment when I found out they editted out the narrator saying that Sam was killed ("Helpful Hitch-hiker") & another edit. Famous Monsters were left alone (thank goodness). At least this CD didn't leave out a whole segment of Alfred Hitchcock talking before "Jimmy Takes Vanishing Lessons" like the other CD. Why can't these companies just re-record the whole thing?

I had this album when I was a kid and I played it over and over. Now, my 7 year old is enjoying it and I am so glad to be able to share it with her! The stories are just creepy enough without being too over the top. They don't "talk down" to the younger listener which is great because many kid-oriented media can do that these days. I totally recommend this treasure. There will never be another Alfred Hitchcock. He was truly one of a kind.

I first listened to this record in the end of the 60's. This is a two disc set. Alfred Hitchcock is the narrator for the first disc only, the second disc is just ballast. These stories are short and quite easy to understand, good for little ones. There is no need to worry that they will have nightmares. There is a current of humor flowing through these tales which is warm and comfortable, easy to feel. Alfred tells us to be kind to ghosts, and how to encourage them to pay a visit. Then he introduces each story. The best part of this is him telling of his plight, which grows worse and worse as the stories progress. Then the macabre ending--ah, but I won't spoil it for you! Without investigating, I strongly suspect this bizarre bit of horror was penned by Hitchcock himself. I love Alfred, but I cannot expect you to. Nor can I expect this to appeal to children of a digital age, as this was for us who grew up "around the radio". Still, here it is, such as it is. As Orson Welles and other great voices fall silent on this wretched world, your living room can sound with Alfred's once more. I recommend this.

Is this the album where if you don't pick up the needle the narrator drowns? I used to listen to same when I was a kid at the local library and have been looking for it. It was a series of short stories including one about a rabbit(?).
