Nail-Biting City!,
By
This review is from: Alfred Hitchcock's Stage Fright (DVD)
A fascinating film made fascinating by Marlene Dietrich (with some help from a false flash back--highly controversial at the time). The other performers haven't much of a chance (especially poor Jane Wyman--who had just ditched Ronny Reagan). Michael Wilding (the police inspector) manages to hold his own (barely) against Dietrich (the murder) and her over the top performance. Hitchcock's daughter, Patricia, has a tiny, close-to-real-life part.
To say the script drips (no pun) with drama and suspense is an understatement. It was films like this (released in 1949) which helped hold television at bay, at least for awhile longer. They don't make `em much like this anymore. Nail-biting city and highly recommended! WILLIAM FLANIGAN, Ph.D.
