Grade 5-8–If students recognize Nobel's name at all, it will most likely be because of his association with the Nobel Peace Prize. Imagine how surprised they will be to learn that Nobel's life work focused on creating explosives, most notably the invention and implementation of dynamite. Binn's readable narrative chronicles the life of a highly motivated, intelligent scientist and businessman whose career had a profound impact on the direction of humankind–for better or for worse. The book is adequately supplemented with historical and cultural information that shows students not only how he came to develop dynamite, but also why the demand for it continued to grow. Average-quality photos (many of which are sepia toned) and reproductions appear throughout.–Holly T. Sneeringer, St. Mark School, Baltimore, MD
