Editorial Reviews

Review

"Secondhand copies of the first edition can go for up to $500, making this a bargain."―Seattle Times

"Among the more unique and innovative contemporary artists of [the Pacific Northwest] is Alfredo Arreguin. Born in 1935 in Michoacan, Mexico, he has spent almost a half century of his life in Washington state. His paintings reflect both experiences and are characterized by distinctive and pervasive patterned backgrounds, elaborate details and images in the patterns, intense colors and figures, objects, and themes that are reflective of the Northwest and Mexico. . . . The text in this handsome volume is in both English and Spanish with numerous beautiful reproductions of his paintings that bear witness to Arreguin’s distinctive talent."―Choice

Review

"Arreguin’s palpitations of color and light and arrested movement awaken our sublimated vision. His paintings seem to force our entire being to experience its livingness as an insatiable yearning and questing of the eyes."―Tess Gallagher, from the Foreword

This book has some of the most amazing and beautiful paintings I've ever seen. All lovers of Mexican or Chicano art should see this! Alfredo Arreguin's subjects include portraits of Mexicans--Frida, Diego, Zapata, Cesar Chavez, Guadalupe--lots of landscapes (mostly jungles but lots of others too), animals, indigenous iconography, and of course faces, millions of faces, all presented in his completely original, eye-popping style that makes you feel like you're entering another dimension. Most of Alfredo Arreguin's paintings have not been plastered all over the internet, so you are sure to find plenty of things you've never experienced before.

This is a beautiful book overflowing with exuberant flora and fauna and icons and beings all woven together in intricate designs that are animated with intense color. Arreguin’s most powerful works go far beyond “patterning painting” into a mysterious sort of recognition, or remembering. You think you have absorbed the painting and then the perspective shifts, and different objects, eyes and faces rise to the surface. Turning the pages of the book I kept having a feeling of déjà vu, though I had never seen most of these images before. This happened especially with the natural landscapes where beautiful birds are passing through various stages of flight and transformation—magically merging into the sea and sky.

There are those who think Arreguin’s work is formulistic and “paint by numbers”, and this criticism might be warranted in a few of the less-inspired paintings where the grid-line seems too heavy and highness of the color too insistent. But in his best work there is a subtle richness to the overall tonality that is achieved by the strategic arrangement of the repeating shapes and colors and forms, and Arreguin controls the effects masterfully.

Lauro Flores made a brilliant decision when he chose to view Arreguin’s work through the lens of the writing of the poet Pablo Neruda. Throughout the book the threads of Neruda’s surreal and visionary words are woven into the discussion of Arreguin’s visionary painting, enhancing both artists work. Though Arreguin says that he was not conscious of Neruda as a source, it’s likely that there was a subconscious connection. In any case, it is an inspired mingling of minds.

This is a well-made hardcover, bilingual edition with over 100 full-color reproductions, many of them full-page. The accompanying essay by Lauro Flores is incisive and Tess Gallagher’s forward is full of warm insight into the life and work of Arreguin, her long-time friend. A fascinating book about a wonderful artist!
