I really enjoy studying Alfred's Basic Piano Course.
I started playing piano rather late at age of 31.
I finished part 1 and 2 and now having started with part 3, I recognize true progress. The music in this book really starts to sound like "true" piano works, using more pedal and finger acrobatics.
I have been looking forward to this book for quite some time, since my piano teacher indicated, that this book contained my favorite "Mondschein Sonata". Although I have downloaded numerous copies of Beethoven's best know work, I am looking forward to reach the pages including this piece.
This piece is included in a special part of the Book known as the "Ambitious section" containing well know classical masterpieces, which will require extra practice at a skill level compared to mine.
The presence of such "ambitious section" really appeals me. Such chapter was not included in part 1 and 2 (although part 2 ended with the familiar "Canon in D" from Pachelbel).
At time I just learnt playing the "Fandango" (3rd piece in the book), which is also very appealing. I really consider this book as a great asset to my study books and I will most likely enjoy every bit of it....Ohhh I love playing the piano ;-)

I've used this to teach beginners from 6 to 60.
Alfred has one special feature other books don't have. When they introduce notes they
put the notes on the page with the name of the chord inside of the note. That way the
student keeps their eyes on the notes and gradually remove the notes.

The pedagogy is excellent. It moves very slowly at first so the student gains confidence
and gradually expands it's complexity. I've brought many students through the book.
My belief is that it's not how fast a student learns, it's that the student continues,
enjoys what they are learning and playing, and pieces aren't out of place to frustrate
students. Of course I'm a modern teacher.

I believe students should first play very slowly so their mind teachers the hand muscle memory.
Playing quickly only sends mixed signals. Practice does not make perfect. Perfect practice makes
perfect and at first students should play very slowly so that there is no wasted motion and one signal
gets sent to the fingers. Speed will come with perfect motion.

I tell my students to play every note as beautifully as they can, they are not just notes to play.
I think the teachers that take complex pieces and spend weeks or more teaching them so they can play
at a recital is horrible pedagogy, unscientific, frustrating, and not musical. Students should learn
songs that they can get the notes within a week and then makes the notes and song more beautiful.

Dances, like waltzes and minuets should be danceable.

GREAT BOOK and SERIES!

This piano book is a great sequel to the other books Alfred has published for the advanced (and adult) piano player and learner. The books contain very good learning tips and examples of music and the knowledge of notes. I highly recommend this series. also for the variety of music pieces from well-known, semi-pop and classical.

If you already have piano experience, this is too basic. Wish they had something that someone who already is a musican but has not played piano for many years, could ease into that is both fun and challenging. I just breezed through this. I would recommend this book to someone who has never played piano and wants to learn.

This is really not the best version available.

For not much more, I would get the All-in-One version (additional 2 bucks) or the All-in-One with CD (additional 4 bucks). Everything in this book, plus additional theory/technique, plus the plastic comb binding allows it to lie flat.

Hey, everybody. If you're looking for what you assume is a supplementary volume to this, Alfred's Basic Adult Piano Course Level Three All-Time Favorites, it doesn't exist. It's never been published.

They have all-time favorites collections for volumes 1 and 2, but they never came out with one for number three. I've been looking for it off and on again for about twenty years, and I finally got to the bottom of why I could never find it.
