It is frequently hard for me to tell if I actually got a problem wrong or if it is a typo in the book!

First of all, it needs to be said that there are a few typographical and/or mathematical errors in this book. I wish I had documented them as I worked my way through it. Now, given that this book was 100% review for me, I was able to spot most of the errors right off the bat.

With that said, I think that this book is perfect for someone who needs to brush up on some algebra skills. I purchased this along with Huettenmueller's College Algebra book in an effort to try to test out of having to take an algebra class in college. I took three years of algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and calculus in high school. I was hoping that with an adequate amount of review, I would be able to avoid having to take it in college 20 years later. Well, I passed the test with flying colors, and I don't think I could have done it without this book. And the best news is, now that I have re-acquainted myself with all of those rules a second time, I don't think I'll ever forget now.

The typographical errors the last reviewer spoke of may not be a big deal for one who is brushing up on previously learned skills, but for one who is trying to learn for the first time it is a really big deal. It is frequently hard for me to tell if I actually got a problem wrong or if it is a typo in the book! I expected much better error checking from a McGraw Hill book. If not for the errors, I would likely give the book a 4 or 5 star rating. The methods are sound, even if the editing is sloppy.

I needed to test out of basic algebra so that I could start right up with an Anatomy & Physiology course. I haven't done algebra since high school--14 years ago--and back then I had HATED it. I couldn't stand math; never have been able to, and barely scraped by with passing grades back then.

I don't know whether it's that the concepts make much better sense to my 28-year-old brain than it did to my 14-year-old brain, or that Algebra Demystified is just that fantastic a book, or both, but I got a 91 on my basic algebra assessment test after about two weeks of daily study. The book is very well written so that the concepts build upon each other: it moves fast, but the previous chapter has always set you up exactly for the next. I tended to go straight for the problems and solutions and figure out patterns from there, though the descriptions were useful if I got stuck. The book usually provided enough practice questions to get a concept to stick, and when it didn't, I could easily find practice questions online to bolster my studying.

I'm a loyal fan of the Demystified series now, and will be picking up Anatomy Demystified and Physiology Demystified because my experience with this book was so good.

I used this as a preemeptive study tool to pass a math placement exam for college. I didn't pass, but I also didn't study as extensively as I should have. What I have worked through in this book has helped me get through the lessons in my algebra class easier. Class feels like review after working through this book.

Bought this book as a review prior to college calculus. This might not be a deal breaker for some readers, but as other reviewers have commented, the typographical errors in this book are egregious. Seriously, you will spend more time trying to figure out how you got an answer "wrong" then you will on the rest of the book combined. What's worse is when you have actually made an error but you can't be sure if it's you or the book.

Additionally, while the book will teach you how to solve specific problems, do not expect to walk away with an understanding of algebraic concepts. The level of learning here is shallow in the extreme. As someone looking to enhance their understanding of fundamentals, this book provided very little.

This is the easiest math instruction book I have ever seen. The explanations are clear, concise and lead to
understanding the subject matter. The examples and test questions become gradually more complex
making it easier to understand and follow.
