I'm a retired math teacher, and I also used to own a math tutoring center. I've tried several different types of products, including books, software, manipulatives, etc. for teaching Algebra to students of different learning styles. But one thing that has remained constant is that we all learn best by repetition. This book does contain numerous practice problems of each algebraic concept. It follows a progressive sequence going from the most basic to more complex topics. I feel this would be an excellent review for those who have been away from Algebra class for awhile and really want to brush up their skills. It would also be a good practice book for students who seem to not retain the skills from one assignment to the next, or for those who just need a little extra drilling of the methodology. I don't feel it's a teaching tool, in that it won't explain the concepts if you don't grasp them, but once you do, this is a great method to remember what you have learned. This would also be an excellent source for homeschoolers.

I also apparently need Reading Comprehension for Dummies, because I missed the fact that this was strictly practice problems. That said, it delivers a wealth of opportunity to practice what you have learned from a different source. And the breakout answers in the back are informative enough to teach if you have some familiarity with the subject. If you want a resource to teach the material, this is not the go-to book. If you need additional practice for your newfound skills, this is a good choice.

I am terrible at math. Always been. So, not too long ago I decided to get some books to keep my skills in a somehow working level. I started with the Basic Math and Pre-Alegebra from the same series (plus the new practice problems, too). I used, then, the Algebra I book and workbook in the dummies series and i truly enjoyed it. Last time I studied algebra was in high school... many years ago.

This book added to the "sharpening." One exercise after another; I enjoyed the problems themselves and the sequence.

Also, there is an on-line subscription that added value to the book. Whether you want to keep your math skills going or you are helping someone, this book is a great tool.

The subtitle of this book is 1001 practice problems, and that, along with the secret website key that is free to use for a year once you sign in are the two strengths of this book. I have two other algebra books, and although they explain the subject just as well and have good practice pages, they aren't long enough if you only work intermittently on them, since you need to review what you forgot. With this book and website you have all the practice you need in one (two) places so you don't have to repeat the same dull exercises over again. Since I tutor math, this also saves me time since I don't have to scour other sources for extra practice.

This Dummies book is full of practice Algebra problems. Just the problems. It's NOT a book that shows you how to work the problems, you need a different book for that. So be careful you are ordering the right book for you. If you want some good practice, this book has hundreds and hundreds of them! It's good practice and was challenging enough to keep me working on them. Buy this with the book that teaches you how to work the problems and you'll be in good shape.

1,001 Algebra I Practice Problems For Dummies (For Dummies (Math & Science)) [Paperback]

One thing that I like about this is you get one (1) free year of online practice that:

-let's you set the level of difficulty, and

As someone who has tutored Algebra at the college level I'd recommend this book especially with the website.

... but what I ordered isn't actually what I wanted!

If you are looking for additional practice books that give you algebra problems to work on, this book will be for you. There are plenty of problems that cover the realm of algebra. In addition, when purchasing the book you are also purchasing access to online problems (which I didn't take advantage of yet!).

However, I was hoping for a "how to" book on solving algebra. Whereas the solutions to the problems explain the process that goes into solving it, there is no "frontloading" beforehand. I really wanted a how to book on algebra.

However, for what the book actually is, is great. :)

This book is a very different type of format from what you may expect from the "For Dummies" series. As with the other books in this series, Algebra 1 Practice Problems is a wonderful way of brushing up on the basics. This book is exactly what it says it is: a huge book of problems to work through. And it is wonderful that at the end of the book not only are answers given, but the entire problem is explained and worked out for you. Just a wonderful aid for someone who needs to brush up on their math.
