4.0 out of 5 stars A Solid Algebra 2 Book, November 7, 2010

This review is from: Algebra and Trig Book 2/Grade 11 (2-12730) (Hardcover)
I've been teaching Algebra 2 off and on at independent schools since before my current students were alive. my school picked this book when it was new to use for a course titled "Algebra 2 Accelerated." The course does not include Trig, although the book does. I like the book because the explanations and examples are pretty straight-forward and a kid who has already seen some presentation of the material can be assigned to read a section and get something out of it. The problem sets have a large numbers of examples, are well-organized and generally appropriate. The word problems are the only mediocre problems in the book. Many are not worded very well. Also, they appear to be aiming at kids who are in 9th or 10th grade (that is the level of the material) and yet the word-problems ask for a more sophisticated problem-solving capacity than most kids have at that age. I assign some of them, but there is intellectual hand-holding needed. Solid book, not spectacular. It isn't as if Algebra has changed a great deal in the last 22 years, and many of the newer books seem more oriented towards catching the kids' eyes or prepping them for this or that standardized test rather than training and challenging their brains. I'll keep using this one, thanks.
