Book Description

James Stewart, the author of the worldwide best-selling calculus texts, along with two of his former Ph.D. students, Lothar Redlin and Saleem Watson, collaborated in writing this book to address a problem they frequently saw in their calculus courses. Many students were not prepared to "think mathematically" but attempted to memorize facts and mimic examples. ALGEBRA AND TRIGONOMETRY was designed specifically to help readers learn to think mathematically and to develop true problem-solving skills. Patient, clear, and accurate, the text consistently illustrates how useful and applicable mathematics is to real life. The new book follows the successful approach taken in the authors' previous books, COLLEGE ALGEBRA, Third Edition, and PRECALCULUS, Third Edition.

This math book helped me get into calculus without much of a mathematical background. I messed around in high school too much :p. For three months I intensely studied this book - I nearly answered all the question. I bought the answer guide to help me see what I was doing wrong. The book is easy to read and understand; all the steps are explained in an orderly manner. If you get stuck, try reading the chapter again, you might have missed a critical part of the puzzle.

Many wonderful long night hours with this book. It's hard enough to keep your attention and make you want to strive to improve.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best book to prepare for calculus!!, September 4, 2008
I had this textbook for my precalculus class, almost never attended the clas, but got all A's on the test and A final grade -- all thanks to this book. You literally don't need a teacher, or any other sources, even if you not a science person, you will be able to understand the concepts. It has a lot of sample problems solved in each section, and then at the end of each section, the problems are listed from very simple to moderate to high difficulty. So once you will solve the simple problems, that will give you ability to solve moderate problems, and then difficult ones from there...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Investment, January 11, 2009
I recommend this book as a quick review of Trig or as extra help along with the textbook for those learning Trig. This book impressed me because it is straightforward and easy to follow. I am terrible at math and I always make dumb mistakes, but this book has all the answers worked out. I used to sit there for hours trying to figure out why I was getting all the answers wrong when I thought I understood how to do the problems. After I bought this book, I was able to see what my mistakes were and correct them within seconds of doing the problem. You might still need help from a person occasionally if you're confused about something in the book, but for the most part this book is better than a tutor because it is more efficient. Instead of waiting for someone else to figure out what your mistakes are, you can just compare your work to the book's!

If you're great at math this book is a great review book because it goes quickly through the essentials in an organized fashion. There is no fluff. If you're trying to cram, it tells you what's most important.
