5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent review resource
Needed to take Calculus in college 7 years after taking it in high school. Opened up the textbook a couple weeks before class to refresh my memory and I realized I didn't even remember what FOIL was. 3.0 out of 5 stars Found Errors
I am just finishing Chapter 5 and already I have found 4 mistakes in basic math and algebra. These errors include mistakes in addition, failing to include a term of an equation in the answer, failure to change signs properly. I am just finishing Chapter 5 and already I have found 4 mistakes in basic math and algebra. These errors include mistakes in addition, failing to include a term of an equation in the answer, failure to change signs properly. I do not know if these errors were made by the author or the publishing company. Either way I feel more attention should have paid to quality control. This book is supposed to help us understand Algebra, but instead it causes confusion with all these errors.

Picked up this book and the Trig workbook and worked through them and was completely up to speed by the time my class started. One major frustration was the numerous errors in the book, which made me triple-check my work a lot. However, the publisher has posted the errata on the downloads section of this book's page on their site.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great primer for intermediate algebra, August 13, 2011
This review is from: Algebra II Workbook For Dummies (Paperback)
As a year-round, full-time math tutor, much of my work is helping high school students with Algebra II, and college students with Intermediate Algebra, or College Algebra. All three of these courses are essentially the same. This Summer, I began using the Algebra II Workbook For Dummies, with weekly tutoring sessions, to help high school students get a head start on the course before they go back to school. This is the complete opposite of hiring a tutor when you're already struggling in a course.

So far, I have no complaints about the workbook (other than the publisher phasing out the Cheat Sheet from all of the For Dummies books). It succinctly keeps the reading material to a minimum without sacrificing necessary content. The workbook is exactly what it says it is, composed mostly of problems to be worked. This way, the student is learning primarily by doing. Enough space is provided so that the student can complete all work directly in the book. No need to carry around a notebook, sheets, or a binder. Just a workbook and pencil is all the student needs to carry around, which is perfect for the Summer.

The number of problems for each topic are kept to a reasonable amount. It's not like a textbook, where a teacher needs to assign problem sets, because it would be impractical and unreasonable to work all of them. The finite amount of space provided for each problem helps train the student to focus and avoid excessive writing in showing the steps of a solution to a problem. On the other hand, the space provided is sometimes not enough. This is where the student can get creative, and use empty space elsewhere on the page, on the facing page, or on a blank page behind the printed solutions at the end of the chapter. They can simply put a page number as a reference to locate the rest of the solution.

I feel that a proper amount of attention is given to all of the major topics covered in intermediate algebra. In-depth coverage and mastery will come by taking the course immediately after or during the completion of this primer. For people who have previously completed the course in the not-too-distant past, this workbook will be a good refresher. One thing I did notice among all of the topics is that Venn diagrams are not utilized in this book to teach unions, intersections, and complements of sets. However, this topic is a small part of this overview, so that is to be expected.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great review book if you have forgotten some algebra, September 26, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Algebra II Workbook For Dummies (Paperback)
I ordered this book due to the length of time it had been since using algebra and I had forgotten a lot of the more advanced algebra properties and rules. I am taking Calculus at the time I ordered this book due to the fact of using algebra to get equations to where we could work with them in Calculus. I was having trouble rearranging equations due to my forgetting the rules etc, but this book definitely helped me regain a lot of that algebra knowledge I had forgotten. It allows you to work through a lot of different types of problems and gives detailed answers to each that helped me understand how they went about solving the problem. Great algebra review book or a book for people taking algebra who need a more detailed description of how to solve problems.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really Did Help Me Out, August 8, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Algebra II Workbook For Dummies (Paperback)
I bought this book two years ago because I had taken a year off of school and when I decided to go to university, I had to take a math placement test. Since it had been a while since I had taken a math class, I decided to buy this book since most of the review for the test was algebra based. The book was extremely helpful.

After struggling a bit, it became more of a review session for me because I had done most of the stuff in that book prior back in high school. Alegbra 2 is probably the easiest of all maths one could learn because its really just about perfecting what you learned in previous courses.

If you are in need of a review, I would go for the workbook. I personally found it unnecessary to have the other companion book to it because this workbook does include examples and other information. But if you are learning it for the first time, you might want to consider getting the companion piece. But either way, the workbook really does help out alot.

This was a great review. I am about to enter college and have not done math in 12 years. This book really got me up to speed and should help out in my placement test. I would recommend this book for anybody who once knew this stuff but needs a refresher for sure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good complement to Algebra II for Dummies, November 19, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Algebra II Workbook For Dummies (Paperback)
I gave this book a 5 star review, but there's something to consider. This book doesn't quite stand alone if you're trying to teach yourself Algebra II without other aids. The workbook is best used in concert with another text, specifically Algebra II For Dummies (For Dummies (Math & Science)). If you're already enrolled in an Algebra II course or are simply looking for math review, this book can probably stand alone just fine, but I would highly recommend using it as a supplement to the above mentioned book, especially if you're learning Algebra II on your own.
