Book Description

4 and up

It's Halloween. Algernon Graeves is in his attic trying to think of the scariest Halloween costume ever.He imagines himself a mummy, a vampire, a werewolf ... but none of those creatures are quite scary enough. So he thinks, and he thinks, and he thinks some more. Will Algernon Graeves be able to turn himself into a scary-enough monster in time to go trick-or-treating with his friends?

This first picture book from author Peter Bollinger celebrates imagination and the wonderful spookiness that is Halloween.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 2–Young Algernon wants a really scary Halloween costume, so he heads to the dark and spooky attic for inspiration. He considers a ghost, skeleton, mummy, werewolf, vampire, and zombie, but these are just not frightening enough, so he combines all six to create a monster that suits his taste. Each of the creatures is realistically portrayed as a scary attic phantom, and then the child is shown in a simple costume. The computer-generated art is just that, nothing special or outstanding, but it should appeal to the movie-special-effects generation. At first glance, the easy reading level may suggest that this would be a good choice for preschoolers, but the phantom monsters may prove too frightening for them. While not a first choice, the book would be suitable for larger collections serving school-age readers.–Angela J. Reynolds, Annapolis Valley Regional Library, Bridgetown, NS, Canada

My 2 grandsons love this book. We first saw it at the library and now we have to own it, because we can only check it out at halloween. We read it 3 times at the library and have read it every night this week. They were not scared of it. They are 4.5 and 19 months

1.0 out of 5 stars Illunstrations not appropriate for all ages, January 30, 2008
By
My 4 year old daughter and I checked out this story at Halloween from our local library. The cover was cute and engaging and we thought it would be fun to read together. When my daughter picked the book to read one evening, she was completely spooked and disturbed by some of the illustrations, and so was I. We talked about the images but she was clearly disturbed. We did not finish the story. While most of the illustrations are cute and engaging, the others border on horror flick interpretations of werewolf's, ghosts, Dracula's and other characters. I'm all for scary Halloween illustrations, but for my daughters age, I thought the illustrations were inappropriate. I could see it for a child over ten. I'm usually pretty liberal about books, but this one, although a cute story, is not appropriate for all ages. I would suggest parents review it first before sharing it with your children.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spooky & Simple, August 20, 2007

My sons, 4-years-old and 22 months, LOVE this book. The pages alternate between graphic illustrations of spooky creatures (ghost, mummy, werewolf, etc.) and cute illustrations of the boy trying to dress scary for Halloween. We've borrowed this from the library twice and plan to buy for a Halloween present this year.
