Of all the computer vision books I have encountered, AIPCV does the best job of explaining concepts clearly and engagingly without sacrificing rigor. Readers don't have to suffer deciphering super concise math notations and the author does a great job of showing how to actually implement these algorithms. Take any computer vision concept like Canny Edge Detector and compare it with other CV books to see what I mean. I only wish the book used OpenCV 2.x instead of 1.x but that's just bad timing. Moreover, to my knowledge, there aren't any comprehensive CV books out there that have OpenCV 2.x examples.

This book is great; the author does a magnificent job presenting often complex algorithms with just the right amount of discussion to make the ensuing algorithm easy to understand. He does it again and again, but in particular I enjoyed the treatment of symbol recognition followed immediately by a chapter on OCR as an application thereof.

Highly recommended.

Fantastic book for getting into image processing
Source code could do with some updating but all in all easy enough to read and
understand.

I only started Image processing recently, so I can only talk for entry level information
from the book

I didn't read the whole thing because it would take me forever and ever effort to understand the contents. I read chap3. morphology. The examples are almost impossible to understand. Their coordinates doesn't make sense (or just simply wrong), and C source codes are cryptic. The variables are like i, j, oi, oj, nc, nr, is, js, etc.
If someone already understands the image processing well, they may understand them but not I. I would return the book if I hadn't spill my coffee on it accidently. Oh well. I am giving 2 stars because some introductory part (chap1) was actually helpful.
