Editorial Reviews

Alias Smith and Jones - The Complete Series! 50 episodes on 10 DVDs! One of the most popular Western series of the 1970s, 'Alias Smith and Jones' aired on NBC for three years, from 1971-1973. In the tradition of the hit movie Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, 'Alias Smith and Jones' follows the exploits of former Devil's Hole Gang leaders Kid Curry and Hannibal Heyes (alias Joshua Smith and Thaddeus Jones), a pair of successful and popular outlaws trying to go straight after a lifetime of mostly non-violent banditry. Settling in a small western town, Curry/Jones and Heyes/Smith must stay out of trouble for an indefinite period of time to earn the pardon the Governor will grant if they can keep to the straight and narrow. In the meantime, they are fair game for the bounty hunters and the long arm of the law trying to put them away for good. Only the silver tongue of Heyes/Smith and the fast draw of Curry/Jones, (plus occasional help from their friends on both sides of the law!) keep them out of the hoosegow. Starring Ben Murphy and Pete Duel as the two charming rogues, the series features a strong cast of recurring characters, including Burl Ives (Big Mac McCreedy) and Walter Brennan (Silky O'Sullivan), as well as an outstanding roster of guest stars including Burl Ives, Pernell Roberts, Susan Oliver, Alan Hale, Jr., Claudine Longet, Rory Calhoun, Jack Cassidy, Neville Brand, Chill Wills, Slim Pickens and John Russell, many of whom made multiple appearances on the show. Narrator Roger Davis took on the role of Hannibal Heyes, following the untimely and unfortunate death of Pete Duel during the second season. Includes the 90 minute pilot, co-starring James Drury (The Virginian), John Russell (The Lawman) and Susan St. James (McMillan and Wife).

4.0 out of 5 stars A "Starter" for fans of "Alias Smith & Jones" July 27, 2013
Verified Purchase
I was disappointed that the cover art was of such poor quality. It was as if someone with kiddy safety scissors had cut out the photos of the actors and pasted them in. Moreover, it is replacement Roger Davis who shares the cover with Ben Murphy and NOT Pete Duel - the original Hannibal Heyes.

The series discs are not numbered and there is not an option for subtitles. I would have loved more behind-the-scenes stuff or at a minimum a blooper reel, but there is a recent "interview disc" included with Ben Murphy and Roger Davis.

The Main Menu offers music from the closing credits BUT the editors evidently did not care enough to make the cut before the "Universal Studios" anthem chimes in after the ending credits of the original show.

This package has all the episodes but clearly, a new version is warranted. A package with subtitles, a booklet with photos, better editing and more extras. It should be made up for the fans (perhaps by a fan) who loves this very special gem of television series as much as the rest of us.

3.0 out of 5 stars video quality awful February 14, 2011
I'm a little surprised to see other people have rated the video quality on the complete series to be good. I've watched the first 5 episodes and find the video quality to be horrible. Most DVDs I watch on my upconverting blu-ray player look pretty good, or at least acceptable. These episodes look grainy. It looks like they are doing a weird frame rate. When people talk, there lips appear to be blurring. Almost like a ghosting effect. I noticed the same thing on a dark train sequence where the wood appeared to be blurring (Episode 5, The girl in Boxcar #3). I've never had an issue with anything else, so I completely believe its the DVD mastering. I notice the mps is low compared to other full frame DVDs of series I own. That said, this is a great series which I used to watch years ago and always enjoyed. 5 stars for great show, 1 star for the video quality.

4.0 out of 5 stars Alias Smith and Jones - Complete Series February 13, 2011

While we have not watched all 10 DVDs, the ones we have watched have been pleasant viewing. The quality is very acceptable, given this was a TV series, not a movie.

The plots vary from engaging to those which jump the shark. But hey, it's all good. Beats the garbage on TV today, and it's family safe.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very happy to find April 9, 2011

This was one of my absolute favorite television series growing up. Loved the actors, especially Pete Duel (died much too young). Some very good plots and twists, so there was even good story line going for it. Alot of nice western vistas, and well done western settings. Did recognize alot of the scenes and sets from also being on the Kung Fu series which was on at roughly the same time. Pete Duel's smile was enough to keep me watching the first time I saw these, now I could also enjoy everything else the show had going for it. Also, the quality of the dvd's was much better than the reruns I saw on cable.

5.0 out of 5 stars 1970's western comedy February 20, 2013
The plot story seem simple...Former Devil's Hole Gang leaders Kid Curry and Hannibal Heyes (alias Joshua Smith and Thaddeus Jones), a pair of successful and popular outlaws trying to go straight after a lifetime of mostly non-violent banditry.

This Butch Cassidy clone, which was an ABC movie of the week like the Night Stalker was, was a cute western plot..which became a series. It had that Maverick: The Complete First Season type feel to it.

Now in the 1970's , the idea of DVDs and Blue ray players and watching whole series at home was a concept unheard of. These TV shows were not thought of for hi-dep TV in the 1970's, when this show original aired. However these masters recordings seem to be the best uncut versions of these shows. Better than the cut up versions that are run on cable television today

The pilot (one disk one of season one) has a special addition to it. It has an audio commentary track with show producer/creator Glen Larson. It will also give you insights on this show that you heard before. I only wish that Davis or Murphy, who are still alive, or a few of the guest cast could have done a commentary track on an episode. Alas that did not happen

Ben Murphy (Jones) was in the whole show's run. Pete Duel started as Smith, until his untimely death in the middle of show's second season. Instead of canceling this western comedy, Duek was replaced by actor Roger (Dark Shadows) Davis, who did the show's original openning narration credits. With Murphy and Davis in the lead, they tried to make the show seamless after Duel's death. Think Bewitched and the multiple Darrens.

Edit .. Richard , im sorry now that i watched it in full , yes i see what you mean , some episodesa very grainy and " the day they hung Kid Curry" Is really bad , oh well , my dvd did struggle on one episode , but when you have Hannibal Heyes on ya screen , i no complain. :)
