Biography

In many ways, Alice in Chains was the definitive heavy metal band of the early '90s. Drawing equally from the heavy riffing of post-Van Halen metal and the gloomy strains of post-punk, the band developed a bleak, nihilistic sound that balanced grinding hard rock with subtly textured acoustic numbers. They were hard enough for metal fans, yet their dark subject matter and punky attack placed them among the front ranks of the Seattle-based grunge bands. Alice in Chains is an American rock band formed in 1987 in Seattle, in the middle of the growing grunge scene. Though their music has clear grunge elements, it also takes cues from heavy metal and other variants of hard rock.

The band was formed in 1987 when Layne Staley met Cantrell at a party. By the time they had signed to Columbia Records in 1989 they had recruited bassist Mike Starr. Their first release was an EP We Die Young, and the title track became a radio hit.
