Thoroughly Enjoyable,
This review is from: Alice Peacock (Audio CD)
It's rare to find an album that offers one enjoyable song after another. Usually you buy a cd for one song, maybe two, and end up listening to it less and less as time goes by. Alice Peacock, however, knew what she was doing when she assembled her self-titled album. When I listen to it, I listen to every song. The great thing about Peacock's music is that there is something in each song that will speak to you. It's in the lyrics, yes, but it's also in the way she puts it across. There is nothing flashy about her voice, but it is honest and sweet. As lame as this might sound, listening to one of her songs is like listening to a friend who is relating a problem, a joy, a story. Admittedly, it took me some time to come to appreciate this album. I heard it a couple of times and thought it was good, but then something shifted in my life and I came to love it. It marks a time, a place and a person for me. It's like a memory now. When I listen to it I'll remember. What a wonderful quality for an album to have. I'm not a fan of Sheryl Crow. There are few female solo singers that do much of anything for me. I like singers that have character, something that sets them apart from everything else that is out there (Norah Jones is a good example), and Alice Peacock definitely fits the bill.

A treasure from an up and coming superstar,

Millions want to be superstars, only a select few have that one thing that seperates the successes from the casualties: desire. Alice Peacock has no shortage of desire, or talent. Some say she is destined to be the next Sheryl Crow, I never appreciated comparisons like those, because in some cases they serve to typecast a person or put a cap on their potential. Alice Peacock has fought to not be the next Sheryl Crow, but to be the first Alice Peacock, and her debut CD is a great introduction to this future star.

A great blend of pop, country and rock.,

This is a record with uniform strengths. Alice Peacock's singing is subtle yet soulful; her songwriting is catchy but brainy, with great lyrical turns; and the arrangements are appealing -- at times harkening back to Globe Sessions-era Sheryl Crow.Lead track "Alabama Boy" grabbed me right away on the basis of a very confident lead vocal; "Bliss" is not the keyboard-heavy ballad you might expect from the title -- rather, an aggressive, whiny electric guitar and techno-ed up drumbeats lend this song a highly unusual and delicious vibe. "Imagination", co-written with Indigo Girl Emily Saliers, progressive from a moody, bass-heavy verse to a soaring, beautifully harmonized chorus; and "Some Things Get Lost" takes things into a more conventional route, a smoky, old-time piano ballad that works fine thanks to Peacock's singing. She is very good at delivering even the most sugary melodies while keeping her voice earthy, strong and textured. A wonderful record.
