Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The author of Sudie has set her appealing second novel in rural Georgia about 50 years ago. The protagonist, teenager Ellie Perkins, is being raised by her widowed and increasingly alcoholic father. When Ellie ventures onto the farm of a reclusive neighboring family, the Guthries, and hears human-like cries coming from a shed, she is faced with a dilemma. Does she risk the lash of Mr. Guthrie's notorious bad temper or put the cries out of her mind? For the conscientious Ellie, the latter is impossible. She discovers that, unknown to anyone in the community, the Guthries have a deaf, epileptic daughter, Alice. Considered retarded by her family, Alice has lived much of her life in the shed. With the help of her older brother Sammy and some townspeople, Ellie is able to intercede in Alice's life to the point where Alice acquires a hearing aid, a tutor and a blossoming romance with Sammy. For all of its emotional and physical violence, this story, told in prose heavily laden with a deep Southern cadence, has a gentle predictability. Readers who prefer social criticism tempered by an upbeat narrative viewpoint will enjoy this one.

Ellie Perkins lives a hard life with a drunken father and her confused brother. Her mother is deceased and so her Aunt Bessie takes on the role of both mother and aunt. Then Ellie finds Alice, a beautiful girl who is deaf and locked away in a shed by her ignorant mother and abusive step-father. Ellie and her brother Sammy sneak her out of the tiny shed and teach her to read, play, count, speak, hear, laugh and to cry. This is a wonderful story that will break your heart. A book you'll never forget!

5.0 out of 5 stars A tribute to the human spirit and the joy of giving., April 20, 1999

This review is from: Alice (Paperback)
I first became aware of Ms. Flanigan's writing upon viewing the film, "Wildflower," which was Ms. Flanigan's film adaption of the novel, "Alice." I just had to find the novel, being aware that the book is always better than the film. I located the book in Oklahoma at a used book store. Upon reading the book I was struck with Ms. Flanigan's incredible ability to describe life in a rural community in the 1930's. I believe, as other reviewers stated on the dust cover, that Ms. Flanigan was writing from her heart about things that she had indeed experienced. I was carried away! What a incredible story! It was as if I had found a pearl on the beach. The language just added to the magic for me. I will now try to locate her other novel, "Sudie" and hope that Ms. Flanigan finds it within herself to write more. Bravo!!

I loved this book. I read it in two days. It is the story of a young girl who comes upon a house where the family is housing a girl in a shed outside their house. With the help of her brother, the girl helps to sneak the girl out of the shed and teach her to become a real girl and in so doing transforms a town. This is a feel good book that will cause you to want to make a difference in those around you! I would highly recommend it. The movie "Wildflower" is based off this book.
