Editorial Reviews

"…And if things work out she's going to stay awhile." And they sure did, resulting in "new girl" Alice sticking around for a triumphant nine season run that saw this new style sit-com become the standard bearer for the next generation of TV comedy.

Alice is the story of Alice Hyatt (Linda Lavin), a recently widowed single mom who finds herself working as a waitress at an Arizona diner while caring for her pre-teen son, Tommy (Philip McKeon). The inimitable Vic Tayback plays Mel, the gruff owner of the diner, while Beth Howland and Polly Holliday play her co-workers, neurotic Vera and no-nonsense Flo. This 3-Disc, 24- Episode Collection collects the entire first season of the Bicentennial-era break-out hit, including the rarely seen pilot episode featuring Alfred Lutter from Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, the film inspiration for Alice. Guest stars include Batman's Adam West, Victor Buono, and Dark Shadow's Lara Parker.

I received this set yesterday and I'm already on the second disc. I forgot how much I LOVE THIS SHOW!

The dvd picture and sound quality is excellent, and is far superior to the versions they used to air on cable. Also, these are the uncut, 25 minute versions of each episode. These complete versions of the episodes haven't aired on TV in over 20 years!

It's unfortunate that nobody under 30 has ever heard of this fun show. I hope they release the remaining 8 seasons soon. I'm having a wonderful time watching these shows again- it's like visiting old friends I haven't seen in many years.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally Alice comes to DVD!! June 19, 2012
Received my dvds today. One of the best comedies in the 70's. An awesome dvd with every episode unedited. I can't wait for season 2. This is a must have!

5.0 out of 5 stars Why did this take over a decade to release? July 7, 2012
By Bryan
This show, if I remember, was a huge hit when it was on tv. Why did it take this long to put on DVD? I bought it and, for the most part, the picture and sound are great for a 36 year old tv show. There are no episode synopsis of any kind anywhere on here and it's the definition of 'bare bones' dvd. This show is hillarious and I want to get the other seasons but how long will that take.... another 10 years(?!). Worth the price(which seems to be double compared to most tv show dvds you can buy these days).

4.0 out of 5 stars Great memories. Great Show. September 6, 2012
By Michael
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Alice is a classic late 70s TV Show that brings back so many memories to me. Rarely, would I miss an episode growing up. Alice was part of the collection of shows that I would say was "Must Watch TV". The characters were played off eachother perfectly. Flo with her 'kiss my grits' attitude was the perfect counter to Mel's brash nature; poor Vera always tried so hard to just get thru the day without a catastrophe; and Alice was the glue that brought them all together along with the zaniest customers ever to set foot into Mel's Diner.

The early seasons were the best in my opinion. Like other shows of the time (One Day at a Time, etc), comedy was a wonderful vehicle for presenting complex & controversal topics on occassion. Alice and the gang are presented life's ups and downs, introduction to alternate lifestyles, shady characters, complex relationships, romance, heartbreak, and all that makes life interesting. Alice was topical, yet timeless. Very rarely are there cases where an episode is dated, and in such cases, the timeless humor and message overcomes any aspect of it being dated.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mel's Diner is open AGAIN! July 9, 2012
I'm so happy that a full season of Alice is now out. I bought the DVD 'tester' of 6 episodes a couple of years ago and nearly wore it out! I love the chemistry between the cast, even after Polly Holliday left. How can you go wrong with a show that casts Martha Raye as the mother to Vic Tayback?

5.0 out of 5 stars used to be sad, used to be shy January 6, 2011
I purchased the complete VOD season 1 of "Alice" because it was always one of my very favorite shows and because each and every ep is so funny, thought-provoking and timeless. Sure the styles are dated and even the catchphrases (Flo's "kiss my grits") may seem a little tame in the year twenty-eleven but the stories and situations of "Alice" are never tired or unimportant.

One of my favorite things about "Alice" has always been the theme song. It just sums up the series, and season 1 in particular wonderfully. Linda Lavin did have a lovely singing voice because she always sounded inviting, like a familiar, old friend at the piano.

The breakout character/star from the moment the series began has always been Flo (Polly Holliday). Part Mea West, part Annie Oakley and 100% Florence Jean Castleberry, this fiery strawberry-blonde redhead knew what she wanted and always went for it. She spoke her mind, she was spicy and sweet and never evasive and if there's one thing I learned from Flo it's that life doesn't stop just because you're a 40-something waitress in Phoenix, AZ. No way. This cowgirl knows how to have a good time.

Some of my favorite eps are probably yours as well. And these include: Alice Gets a Pass - Alice finds out that Mel's old college buddy swings in the opposite direction in one of the first instances that homosexuality was dealt with in a '70s sitcom, Goodnight, Sweet Vera - the girls try to save poor Vera's life after she tries to OD on pills, and The Odd Couple - Flo moves in temporarily with Alice after her trailer is stolen. Take special note of Flo's nightgown in this ep, what a hot mama.

5.0 out of 5 stars There's a new girl in town and she's lookin' good! July 30, 2012
Finally the first season of "Alice" is available on DVD and it was well worth the wait! This was one of my all-time favorite shows when I was a kid - it ran for 9 seasons (1976-1985) on CBS and was a solid ratings hit. This is a classic TV sitcom at it's very best - the writing was first rate and the original cast - Linda Lavin, Polly Holliday, Beth Howland, Vic Tayback and Philip McKeon were amazing!

Season 1, while certainly not the best season, is still a treat - my favorite episode was "The Odd Couple" when Flo moves in with Alice after her trailer is stolen. Some of my other favorite episodes from the first season were "A Call To Arms", "Good Night Sweet Vera" and "Mother-in-law" (a 2 part episode).

Here's hoping that Season 2 is released soon - I've heard that it should be out by the end of 2012 just in time for Christmas - fingers crossed!
