Avril is finally growing up - at least musically. And it was certainly about time. While I've always enjoyed her music, I must agree with those who felt her musical direction on her latest album, «The Best Damn Thing», was a wrong turn and it seemed somewhat stupid for a twenty-two year old to market herself to a even younger tween audience than she appealed to when she first debuted. While «Let Go» had a few catchy tunes, «Under My Skin» were more compelling as a whole, providing a more mature site of Avril Lavigne which was more suitable to her image.

With this new single, «Alice», which is the anthem for Tim Burton's «Alice in Wonderland», Avril has taken a more mature and more artistic direction of her sound. It's more wondrous, more theatrical and more sophisticated, which fits the surrealistic tone of Wonderland.

Melodically, the song does resemble Alanis Morisette's «Thank You» (which by the way is also a brilliant song). That isn't such a coincidence, considering that Avril and Alanis have always been comparable, both vocally and artistically. You could also call this song a Tori Amos version of «Thank You», since the orchestral arrangement of the song does highly resemble a Tori Amos tune.

However, this song also provides some vocal challenges for Avril, since she pulls out a really high note on the chorus. Not that it actually sounds terrible, but it still appears as strained. However, the high notes don't affect this catchy, melodic tune in a negative way. The song also appears as overall a bit rushed, even for its running time of 3:34 minutes.

Nonetheless, Avril Lavigne has once again made a good song, even with a different musical style. Now we just have to wait and see if this new direction will be present on her upcoming album.
